Saying that Tel Aviv is safer than Tijuana (a place I am actually familiar

with) is to damn Tel Aviv with faint praise. No sensible American goes to

Tijuana except under direst need, and the locals are all terrified too. As

they should be.

Both Mexico and Israel are suffering a decline in tourism because of bad

publicity, but so far as I can tell no one is making these stories up, there

ARE suicide bombers in Jerusalem who don¹t much care who they take out, and

there IS a drug war going on in Mexico. That doesn¹t mean that everyone

who goes to either place is immediately shot or blown up, but it does make

travel to those places risky.

When I was a lot younger I¹d disregard this kind of information, but perhaps

getting older makes me more cautious. I don¹t want to go to Jerusalem badly

enough to take the risk.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, as it says in the psalm.

I noted in an earlier post that I travel frequently and have never had an issue

with the screeners being anything but professional and courteous. I think one

reason is I'm prepared. When I step through the metal detector and it goes

" bing, " I have on no shoes, no belt, no watch, no rings, absolutely nothing in

my pockets. Other than my clothes, I have my driver's license and boarding pass

in my hands.

And, I'm friendly and courteous as they go about their job of wanding and

patting me down. This process has never taken more than a couple minutes. And

I've flown at least 50 times with my fake hip(s).

The people that I notice getting held up and treated somewhat rudely are the

" clueless " ones. You know them. They walk through the metal detector and find

they had their cell phone in their pocket. They go through again, " oh whoops, my

watch is in my pocket. " The third time, it's the forgotten eye glass case-- " oh I

did not think that would set it off... "

For an embarrassing story, one time as the screener was finishing with his pat

down, he said quietly: " sir, your fly is open. "

I know I'm terrible on followup to my enquiries but 'nother question: has

anybody on here been on a cruise recently? Because there's the vague sliver of

a chance that I might be going on one if I think it won't affect my health too

much. I was just wondering if anyone's had specific problems with navigational

equipment and stuff like that.

I went on a cruise several years ago when I had far worse ES than I do

now. The worst areas of the ship for me was the casino. :-)

Otherwise, it wasn't really a problem...

I went on a cruise on one of the newer ships and the Wi-Fi was very strong.

They had strong Wi-Fi routers every few rooms. Even in public areas walking up

and down the steps it was up to several mW/m^2. I think the top of the boat was

a little better. I used shielding fabric at night to block it in the cabin.

You may be better off on an older ship without all the new technology.

What size was the ship? The one I have a hail- chance of getting on is

comparatively small - an Xpedition I think it was - for tooling around the

Galapagos islands. The receptionist desk for the travel agency was no help

whatsoever.

No, the one I was on was one of the BIG cruise ships, with hundreds

(thousands?) of passengers. And I don't think there was any wi-fi

on it...
