I suggest you read our file: " CR Made Easy " . Cut way back on the pasta

and make it whole wheat pasta when you do eat it if you want to do CRON.

Substitute more veggies and some fruit. Read all our files under " Beginning

CRON " and be sure to read Dr W's book " Beyond the 120 Year Diet " , if you

haven't yet.

Shouldn't we find out how much pasta he eats before recommending that he

" cut 'way back " ? I think the best recommendation for anyone is to find what

works best for them given conditions and food choices available to them.

For example, although I am sure you didn't mean it, your post makes it sound

like if you are eating regular instead of whole-wheat pasta, then you aren't

doing CRON. If I believed that, it would be very discouraging because

whole-wheat pasta is simply not for sale where I live.

I think there are lots of different ways to do CRON, and, within certain

very general boundaries, if they work well for us and our unique personal

makeup, they are Correct.

He said his diet is based on 3 items: fish, pasta and vegetables. One can

infer that pasta is a large part of his diet from that statement. I do

maintain that if one is eating a lot of regular pasta, (rather than an

occasional serving) one is not doing CRON - esp. the ON part. These would

be empty calories and cutting down on empty calories is an essential

component of CRON.

There is also the school of thought that pasta, white bread and starches

lead to shorter life (as seen in lower animals). I won't go there in this

post, but as someone who occasionally eats pasta myself, I would certainly

recommend to cut back until we know more. I'm no fanatic and believe that

people should leave some of the joy of eating in life (if it's pasta that

they enjoy). But as a steady diet, not if you're a CRONIE,

I see where you are coming from: maximum ON.

I was thinking more in terms of Adequate Nutrition. However, if you want to

maximise the nutrition in everything you eat, then cutting out regular pasta

would be a good idea.

When I first started CR, I ate only 1500 cal/day and thus ate no pasta at

all. I've gradually had to increase my intake because I was losing weight

too fast. Now I'm at 2000 cal/day and have plenty of room for relatively

non-nutrient dense foods like pasta. I have no trouble getting two or three

times the RDA vit & min, fiber, and 1 gram of protein per kg of bodyweight,

while still eating 350 calories of starches like potatoes or pasta a day.

Maybe it means I'm not doing CRON, but it works for me and I can't see how

changing is going to help.

Hi Chris:

Of the many surprising insights I have learned here, one of the most

surprising to me is that starch may not be benign. I do not have to

hand the post numbers that suggested that. But if you searched the

archives for 'starch' you would certainly find them.

For a start, the only essential difference (in quantity or type of

food) between Mattson's control mice and those on CR, was that starch

was almost totally eliminated from the diet of the CR mice, which

lived MUCH longer than the control mice. This of course does not

prove that starch is harmful. But it does rather strongly suggest

that it is not helpful. (Comprehensive details of the diets of

Mattson's mice were posted here soon after the study was published,

some months ago).

There are other *suggestive* indications that there may be a link

between high starch intake and cancer. One example is that women who

eat diets unusually high in carbohydrates appear to be more prone to

breast cancer. (Source: CEB & P, August 2004). There are others,

also, that have been posted here.

These hints are by no means conclusive at this point. But they have

made me decide to considerably reduce my starch intake. (And it is

worth noting that whole grain products contain only a little less

starch than their white versions.) So I am now viewing potatoes,

rice, pasta and bread in a much different light.
