Guest guest
To remove the PrettyPark worm: 1.On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run. 2.Type REGEDIT, then click OK. 3.Modify the following Registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\exefile\ shell\open\command and change files32.vxd " %1 " %* to " %1 " %* For clarity, these seven characters are the following: double quote, percent sign, the numeral one, double quote, space, percent sign, and asterisk. Don't forget the space. 4.Delete the PrettyPark.exe file. 5.Restart your computer. 6.Delete the \Windows\System\Files32.vxd file. This info from http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/prettypark.worm.html > If you got a message from me with Pretty Park on it please DO NOT > OPEN IT. It contains a virus. I don't know how I got it or what to > do about it but I am trying to get it cleaned up. If anyone has any > suggestions please let me know. I am SO SORRY about this. Guest guest
OregonDCs: Recently there was a Virus alert sent out stating that a message which may have originated in my office called " Neurologists " or one of the responses titled the same carried a .kak computer virus. I have neither had any virus picked up by my antivirus program, nor have I found any sign of .kak files anywhere on my computer. I am uncertain what is being picked up by the virus programs of certain users of OregonDCs. I just wanted everyone to know that I can not find the origin of the problem on my computer. Guest guest
I got this from a friend of mine who is an engineer at Boeing. The test is self explanatory. ---------------- Begin Forwarded Message ---------------- I don't usually send these out and do not want to get these types of messages from you. Boeing has a great e-mail police force and I thought you may want to take advantage of it by getting these warnings. We get about one of these warnings every three months or so. Why so few? Because most virus alerts are bogus. And because Boeing only posts the ones that they have not already blocked with their virus protection software. So, if you get one of these warnings from me, it is very likely a real issue to watch for. Sincerely, Shane ___________ A virus was detected Thursday in the Boeing e-mail system, affecting both Exchange and Outlook 2000. Incidents have been reported throughout the company. If you receive an e-mail message that refers to a movie in its subject line and includes an executable attachment, DELETE IT. Do not open the attachment, as that triggers the virus. ----------------- End Forwarded Message -----------------

Guest guest
Virus alert My computer was infected with the " loveletter " virus yesterday. The attachment was entitled the " White House and FBI " . This virus is sent by taking all the contacts on an e mail list and forwarding the message to them. Please do not open any attachment from me with this title. Remember, just because you know the e mail sender, it doesn't mean he or she actually sent the e mail. Always use virus scanning software. Guest guest
Dear List, Being a member of the computer geek community, I am rather skeptical of this it and to the best of my knowledge does nothing to prevent you from being infected by a worm. The best way to protect yourself from worms and viruses you need to update your virus protection weekly, Most new virus protection is not set up to auto update on a regular schedule. It is also very important to update your operating systems and mail programs with patches. Both of which can be found on your operating systems websites. They self install but are rather large files. There are known security problems with win2K, XP and Office XP which could allow worms and viruses in but the patches are there to fix them. hope this helps Rausch Biomedical Engineer Physical Disabilities Branch National Institutes of Health tracy_rausch@... Guest guest
This tip listed below will work only if the worm is of a type that uses the address book. One of the newer ones (Badtrans. uses the names from unread messages in the in box. It will also use the subject lines from the inbox so as to appear a reply. The vast majority of the viruses transmitted are sent due to two default holes in the Windows OS. 1> By default, the preview pane is on in Outlook. This should be set to off. You will need to open each email. 2> By default, Windows hides extensions (the 3 letter names at the end of a file) This should be set to show the extensions. (In Explorer, Click Tools>Folder Options...Click the View tab. Under Advanced settings. Change the item, Hide file extensions for known file types to be unchecked. Click the Apply button. If you are not expecting an attachment, you should suspect it. File type of .PIF, .SCR, .COM, .EXE, should be suspect. File types of .DOC, ..XLS, and .PPT can contain self executing macros which can cause problems. You are better off opening the parent application first and then opening the file, as you will be offered the option to disable macros. You cannot as yet receive a virus from an image file. I believe there has only been one incident of a virus in a .PDF. If you have been infected, this may help. <http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.goner.amm (DOT) removal.\ tool.html> Information about current 'high risk' viruses: <http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/goner/default.asp?cid=2636> <http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/badtrans/default.asp?cid=2607> Steve Kuykendall IT Director AccuGraphics, Austin TX At 07:18 AM 12/5/2001, you wrote: >Someone anonymously sent us this message: > ><I would like to give the group a tip that will help you find and bypass >the problem of >Wormvirus. > >1. Mel Siff] I would not expect this to work with most e-mail clients. It would error on that first e-mail but the error would come after it had already sent messages to everyone else. However, you could use this sort of technique to let yourself know that you had been infected. You could create a special address in your address book that sends mail back to yourself. Guest guest
Thanks Rita. This is the same hoax virus alert that that was being circulated before Christmas. Message then read: Please note that the 'sulfnbk.exe' virus message is a hoax. For full details, refer to the symantec anti-virus site, http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html This site contains instructions on how to restore the sulfnbk.exe program if you have deleted it. We could all learn a lot about epidemiology by looking at the way computer viruses (and imitation ones) spread! As in communicable disease, prevention is better: I am conscious of a need to update my virus protection. Guest guest
Virus name: JDBGMGR.EXE. Status: Hoax. Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2002] I got this message about a virus that can produce lot of dammage [sic] to your computer. If you follow the instructions which are very easy, you would be able to " clean " your computer. Apparently the virus spreads through the adresses book . I got it, then may be I passed it to you too, sorry. The name of the virus is jdbgmgr.exe and is transmitted automatically through the Messanger and addresses book of the OUTLOOK. The virus is neither detected by Norton nor by Mc Afee. It remains in lethargy ( " sleeping ) for 14 days and even more, before it destroys the whole system. It can be eliminated during this period. The steps for the elimination of the virus are the following: 1. go to START and click FIND 2. in " FILES andFOLDERS " write: jdbgmgr.exe 3. be sure that it searches in " C " 4. click SEARCH NOW 5. if the virus appears (with icon of a small bear) and the name " jdbgmgr.exe . don't open it !!! in any case !!! 6. click the right button of the mouse and destroy it 7. emty the recyclage bin If you find the virus in your computer please send this mail to all the people in your addresses book . thanks. Origins: Like the SULFNBK.EXE hoax, this bogus virus warning (also known as the " Bear Virus " ) attempts to lure gullible users into deleting perfectly innocuous, standard Windows files from their systems. In this case the target file is JDBGMGR.EXE, which is the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java program. It is included as part of a standard Windows installation, is not a virus, and should not be deleted. (The icon for this file is a graphic of a bear like the one shown to the left.) See the links below for more information on the JDBGMGR.EXE hoax: Additional information: Jdbgmgr.exe file hoax (Symantec Security Response) Jdbgmgr.exe hoax (McAfee Virus Information Library) Last updated: 22 April 2002 The URL for this page is http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/jdbgmgr.htm Click here to e-mail this page to a friend Viruses -- VIRUS ALERT Hi I found this file on my C drive - don't know whether it was a virus or not but I deleted it - and I am afraid you are in my address book. Bw Rosie Venables Virus warning I received a warning about this virus and yes it was in my system and so may also be in yours as you are in my address book. The name of this virus is jdbgmgr.exe and it is sent automatically by the Messenger and by the address book. The virus is not detected by McAfee or Norton and it stays quiet for 14 days before damaging the system. The virus can be cleared before it deletes the files from your system. In order to eliminate it, it is just necessary to do the following steps: 1. Go to Start, click " Search " (or " Find " ) 2. In the " Files or Folders option " enter the name jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure that you are searching in the drive " C " 4. Click " find now " 5. If the virus is there (it has a little bear-like icon with the name of jdbgmgr.exe) DO NOT OPEN IT FOR ANY REASON 6. Right click and delete it (it will go to the Recycle bin). 7.Go to the recycle bin and delete it or empty the recycle bin. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS IN YOUR SYSTEMS SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ALL CONTACTS LOCATED IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK BEFORE IT CAN CAUSE ANY DAMAGE.
