Guest guest
Walford New Book --------------------- Report on S. California CR Meeting Sunday, 11 July 2004. ------------------------------------------------------- Seven of us Southern Calif CRFolks just celebrated a wonderful afternoon together this past Sunday 11 July 2004. We met at at a private home donated in the City of Marina del Rey, CA -- adjacent to the City of Venice on the beach. Marina del Rey is famous for being the " Headquarters " of the Internet (governing units ICANN, IANA, and ISA). The city also has the largest manmade small-boat harbor in the world. CR Food dishes (it was all CR food!) included avocado dip, fresh raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, sliced nectarines, sliced cantaloupe, low-cal crackers (with the avocado dip), carrot sticks to dip into Bragg Liquid Aminos and brewers yeast, and a bunch more items that I can not remember at this time! Thanks to everyone who brought the delicious yummies. One omission is that we (I) forgot to take digital pictures, this in part due to the excitement of the meeting, and the fact that almost all of us knew each other from past group meetings. I brought my camera, but the sheer fun of the meeting overshadowed the importance of picture taking! A highlight was seeing and hearing all about the new CR book that Walford is authoring. We saw firsthand the front cover design and a page or two from the book: Title: The CR Diet: A Practical Guide To Living 120 Vital Years Author: Walford, Delaney Availability: Not yet released. Edition: Paperback 128 pages Dimensions: 7.50 " x 5.00 " ISBN: 1568583095 Editorial Reviews & Book Description: At last, here's a book that synthesizes the increasingly popular CR (Calorie Restriction) diet for the layperson. CR is not a diet primarily about weight loss, although readers will lose weight. CR is about eating highly nutritious foods in smaller quantities to extend your healthy years. Here's the concept: eat less, but choose foods more carefully. This will " upregulate " your metabolism; in other words, what goes in will be used more economically. Dieters will feel better and function better - and the big bonus: the CR diet slows aging. CR lengthens the periods of youth and middle age and substantially reduces the risk of virtually all the diseases of aging. Walford and Delaney, two longtime CR practitioners, will take you on a handheld stroll through the process, including an introduction to CR, how to do it, some of the key issues in the current dialogue, and the skinny on superfoods. --------------------- There were lots of other interesting discussion items, one of which was " Dallas " , the adorable Maine coon cat who crawled up into our laps to snuggle up cozy. Partial Listing of Discussion items (in random order): (1) Medical test results (from Kronis Labs) (2) CR Cardiovascular Risk Improvement Study for CR Diet Followers by Dr. Luigi Fontana, guest speaker at CR Conference III. (3) Osteoporosis DEXA scan results T-scores. (4) Methods of improving bone density and strength. (5) Isometrics as a pro-CR muscle toning and bone density aid. (6) Sharing a copy of the CRS Insider Newsletter issue #1 honoring Dr. Roy Walford. (7) Reprint handout for everyone of Walford and Kathy Hall article in Experimental Gerontology, 39 (2004) 937-941, " The Non-Scientific Side of Roy Walford " . (8) Information about CR Conference III. (9) New ideas for helping people start a CR lifestyle. 10) DWIDP (Dr. Walford's Interactive Dietary Planner) status. 11) Discussion about artificial sweetener preferences. 12) Amounts and selections of green leafy foods for a good CR diet. A big thank you goes to Saul Lubkin, who inspired our meeting together that afternoon. And a very special Thank-You to our Marina del Rey hosts who volunteered their home on very short notice for our gathering. It was the greatest -- a lively, wonderful, fun-filled event. Thank you all who made our meeting possible, and who were able to attend. This meeting was truly very worthwhile, and a memorable CR get-together. Thank you all! -- Warren
