Guest guest
I don't know of any " long term " studies on the plant sterols but there is the work of that has been posted here a few times. However, as they are now available in several forms, I would not rank the margarine as the " best " choice due to the calories and types of fat. You can get plant sterols in capsules with very little calories from two companies, one is Benecol and they are sold at walmarts and at their website and the other is called Cholest-Off which is distributed by nature made and can be purchased at most retail drugstores/pharmacies. The doseasge is 2 gel caps, 2x a day. I would rank the Orange Juice by Minute Maid which is called Heart Smart (I think) as the second choice. I would rank the margarines as the last choice. How do we know they are not just a repeat of the 'margarine is healthier than butter' advice of thirty years ago? (Of course we now know that that advice could hardly have been more wrong). Why does anyone have to use ANY greasy spread of uncertain merit on anything? IMO it is merely a matter of habit, and habits can be changed. (Or in the case of children, never formed in the first place). fwiw Rodney. > > Hi, > > > > I'm a newish subscriber and have been lurking for a while. **This > is a great list**. Guest guest
I always thought that our ideas about Omega 3's came from recent scientific info, not from what we surmise about our ancestors . What our ancestors ate isn't a scientific way to go about planning a modern diet and doesn't always jibe with the healthiest way to eat from what we now know. on 8/29/2004 10:44 PM, citpeks at citpeks@... wrote: > Trish, > > The idea that we are not getting the right ratios of omega6 to omega3 > fatty acids comes from speculations about what our ancestors might > have eaten thousands of years ago when corn-fed cattle did not exist. > But these are SPECULATIONS.
