Guest guest
Hi folks: For as long as I can remember (at least 25 years) I have noticed that if I eat in the middle of the day, no matter what time (any time 11 am thru 3 pm), an hour later I have trouble staying awake. It is a symptom I have put up with, but that I would have liked to 'fix'. What I have discovered the past week is that Lee Shurie has given us the solution. Don't eat until 6 pm!!! It is odd really. One might have thought that a lack of calories throughout the day might cause drowsiness from an energy deficiency. But in practical terms the opposite is true in my case - if I don't eat I don't become sleepy! The first few days of not eating I did feel hungry, but much less so as the days went by. On the weekend I did a Pubmed search for 'post-prandial sleepiness'. Interestingly it is clear from what I found that no one knows what causes it. One recent study observed that the majority of subjects reported tiredness after eating, or were more likely to fall asleep in the hour or two after eating. They also noted that consuming a similar amount of water did NOT have the same effect. One study indicated that the type of food consumed was NOT a factor either. So it is quite apparent that the phenomenon is not understood. Thanks Lee! Rodney. More on my experiments with Lee's revelation in another post.
