Guest guest
Hello all, I've been away for a few months, but I'm not happily on the list again... This is actually a follow study on work being done across the street from me here (University of Alberta). For the record, successful human trials have been underway for years now & the UofT group is (I believe) looking into alternative or more effective means of harvesting the pancreatic cells -- that's it... The beeb article says: > Professor Anne Cooke, from the Stem Cell > Institute at the University of Cambridge, > said it was " an encouraging first step " > which could hopefully be followed through > to the production of stable cell populations > secreting insulin in real life conditions. It's worth pointing out that " the Edmonton Protocol ... has been successfully used to free patients from insulin by transplanting donor-pancreatic cells--cells needed to produce insulin--into eight people from Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. All needed up to 15 self-injected insulin shots a day before the study, which took place more than a year ago. " In other words, it's " an encouraging first step " toward an alternative method of harvesting cells for a procedure that's already being used. The article also got the University of Toronto's name wrong... http://www.med.ualberta.ca/islet/ http://www.expressnews.ualberta.ca/expressnews/articles/printer.cfm?p_ID=732 http://www.expressnews.ualberta.ca/expressnews/articles/news.cfm?p_ID=6012 & s =e Cheers, james > -----Original Message----- > From: Rodney [mailto:perspect1111@...] > Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2004 12:04 PM > > Subject: [ ] Possible Eventual Cure for Type I Diabetes? > > > http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/default.stm > > http://snipurl.com/8nm2 > > Rodney. > > > > > >
