I'm too lazy to answer the recent posts individually so here's my $.06

Re: raisins I'd be quite surprised if drying somehow changed anything other

than the water content. Anti-oxidant content wrt this lower weight may make

raisins look better than grapes " by weight " but it's a contrived comparison.

Raisins are convenient but dense. In a classic case of " do what I say not

what I do " , I bake raisins in my daily mega-muffin (Sherm's Mega muffin) but

only consume some 40 grams spread out across 3 weeks.

Re: dizziness immediately upon standing, I don't remember the formal name

for it something like " orthotic hypotension(?) " but I may have the name

wrong. Yes it may also occur in young people perhaps after a growth spurt

where their body hasn't adjusted to the new pressure difference between

sitting and standing. Occurrence among older folks is probably related to a

less sharp physiological response to the change from rising suddenly and

lower than typical BP. I suspect more get it from too much BP medication

than CR :-).

A perhaps useful distinction is that momentary low BP is usually just that

" momentary " and it clears quickly. Low blood sugar events persist for

minutes or longer. To add a curve ball, I have even experienced a third

rather unusual mechanism for dizziness (actually a phantom sense of motion)

caused by a loose piece of bone moving loose inside an inner ear organ that

the brain uses to sense head motion. No doubt a sports injury broke one of

these calcium nodules loose and the brain detecting head motion when it

really wasn't was quite disorienting until I figured it out, actually I

found it on the internet. I love the internet. Not to keep you in suspense,

the cure was to rotate my head in a specific sequence that caused the loose

piece of bone to lodge securely in the bottom of the general area.

Finally regarding gum disease, the mouth just like the gut has a

micro-environment with friendly and unfriendly micro-organisms. I recall

reading about mother's passing the good flora to children thru breast milk.

While I have no doubt that mouthwash will probably just kill them all. The

mouth will get reinfested as soon as the mouthwash wears off and " do you

feel lucky " . I'm afraid I don't know any strategy for seeding a mouth with

healthy flora, and I'm sure that even the healthy flora needs to be managed

but like our gut good diet (and brushing) may do it.

A healthy low energy diet will reduce inflammation levels and stimulate the

immune system, both good things for our mouth. The main problem with

knocking down infections inside teeth is that there is so little blood flow

that you can't attack with the conventional regimen of dosing up on

anti-biotics. I recall my dentist telling me years ago that he had seen

numerous dramatic improvements in the mouths of patients who improved their

diets.

Strangely enough my personal oral experience was not totally consistent with

this understanding. During a number of years while my energy intake was very

un_CR, and my dental hygiene was non-existent I had almost zero dental

problems. Upon changing to a more healthful, at least relatively more

healthful diet my mouth suddenly started acting up. In hindsight I ate a lot

of (muenster) cheese during this period so perhaps that particular strain of

flora was magic.... probably not. I'm getting pretty far out on a limb with

this so please don't follow me out here. This last bit may be good piece of

internet lore to just ignore.

Hi JR:

I include some raisins in my diet for their claimed antioxidant

capacity. But I grant you they are rather energy dense relative to

the regular micronutrients.
