warning... what follows is opinion...

My personal theory re: fiber and colon health is that the useful mechanism

may be fiber's relationship to transit time of food matter in the alimentary

canal (faster is generally better).

Parsing out the benefit may not be a simple as type of fiber but may be

related to how much, mix of other foods present, hydration level, energy

balance, micro flora, etc etc....

just my $.02... fiber is probably good, but I'm not sure I'd add sawdust to

bread like they did when the benefit of fiber first became popular :-)

" Fiber and colon cancer

For years, Americans have been told to consume a high-fiber diet to

lower the risk of colon cancer--mainly on the basis of results from a

number of relatively small studies. Unfortunately, this recommendation

now seems mistaken, as larger and better-designed studies have failed to

show a link between fiber and colon cancer.

One of these--a Harvard study that followed over 80,000 female nurses

for 16 years--found that dietary fiber was not strongly associated with

a reduced risk for either colon cancer or polyps (a precursor to colon

cancer).

Again, the devil is in the details..
