Guest guest
The note from Monsanto says: >>> VISTIVE soybeans, which will have the Roundup Ready® trait, contain less than 3% linolenic acid, compared to 8% for traditional soybeans, resulting in a more stable soybean oil, with a better flavor profile, and less need for hydrogenation. Because soybeans with less linolenic acid reduce or eliminate the need for partial hydrogenation, trans fats in processed soybean oil can be reduced or eliminated. >>> The Roundup Ready trait is provided by a gene which produces an insensitive target site (i.e. glyphosate cannot bind to the enzyme, which is blocked conventional crops) that makes the soybeans resistant to Roundup herbicide. From the point of view of nutrition, I don't know if this is an advance or not. Of course, it is good IF hydrogenation is eliminated, but I would not bet on it. The other concern is that the omega6/omega3 ratio will increase from about 7:1 to 18:1, which may have some health consequences as discussed recently (Message 14450).
