Guest guest
Hi , First, I've known a number of poor people who were NOT fat, who were regular weight or under weight. As to poor people who ARE fat, I think it comes down to not only high carb foods, but low quality high FAT foods like cheap corn dogs, cheap hot dogs, the cheapest, highest fat content ground beef when they can afford meat, cheap margarine -- etc... People are obese due to their own ignorance of health and proper diet. I don't really think money is the reason so much as choice is the cause. Just my thoughts anyway. -- Peace, love and light, Don Quai " Spirit sleeps in the mineral, breathes in the vegetable, dreams in the animal and wakes in man. Guest guest
I've done a lot of volunteer work in our local homeless shelter, and our local soup kitchen that feeds hundreds of families daily. The quality of food is good, but poor at the same time. Good in that they are getting real, hot, and filling meals. Poor, because the meals are mostly meat and potatoes, lots of carbs and starch. Filling, to be sure, but definitely not healthy. I guess they figure that a filling, fattening meal is better than none. I've been homeless in the past, lived on the streets holding up a sign that I'd work for food. A filling meal can mean a lot, even if it is not well balanced. I guess I need to go to the grocery store and price it out IE boxed pasta compared to a bag of carrots. Pasta is more filling then carrots so I understand what you say . If you are shopping at a food pantry, you may not have a choice of a bag of carrots. I guess it depends on the individual, onwhat they are willing to eat, how much of it they have available, and as Don said, it's always a personal decisionup to a point. I happen to shop on occasion at a local food pantry when we were very tight and myhusband was unemployed. They give foods that are past the expiration date. Cakes. Gooey disgusting stuff. Muffins those huge ones that have 800 calories a muffin, lots of bread, and the veggies, 8 times out of ten, are rotten, which kind of makes one wonder why one human would even insult another human by giving them out as food, but they are a good operation and try to help the best they can... Oh yea, potato chips past the expiration date, and on alucky day, a gallon of milk and a dozen of eggs. the only reason I went back was theyput the bread from the health store in a special box of stuff they assume nobody wants ( and usually nobody does ) and say "take allyouwant fromTHAT box" if you go to the store with foodstamps, you will find that steak is always expenseive, and oscar myer weaners are expensive, but there is always a cheap brand of hot dogs you can get for 99cents on sale. Cheese is another story. Some of itmay be due to uneducated choices, but some of it IS due to what's available for less. Most people are not inclined to be vegetarians and are not going to go for the head of cabbage, though cabbage is certainly more affordable than hot dogs peace, cathie
Guest guest
<<<<Some of my closest friends have been very poor. Most of them were NOT fat, but seemed to me to be either their ideal weight, or under. I do see a lot of fat people at the food pantry, however, which IS a puzzle.>>> Well, see, that’s my point. Truly poor people are thin. I guess I’m just tired of fat people using this as an excuse when it’s their choices and over eating that’s the real reason. Good for you getting that last 15 lbs. off. Much easier then letting it turn into 20, 50, 80, etc.
