Guest guest
Jeff.....I enjoyed what you wrote about your Hurricane experiences at the grocery store! I guess people show their " true colors " during a crisis....i.e., low-carb intentions fly out the window. LOL When you are through dealing with Jeanne, would you post your " Heart Healthy Hurricane Survival Guide " ? I don't live in Hurricane country....I live in Montana....home of blizzards. Same type of thing happens here with the run on grocery stores for " junk " . With your permission, I'll make copies to give to the various businesses as winter is approaching. Who knows? Maybe one person (you) really CAN make a difference. I went to the grocery stores just before the hurricanes hit, and for all the people who are supposed to be on " low carb " diets, the bread aisles were the first to be cleaned out after the water. As was the cookies, cakes, crackers, etc etc. For me, it was a pleasure to shop cause the only thing left on the shelves, was the healthy items. Now, maybe not all the ideal Cr-ON foods, but under the circumstances of facing the loss of water, and electricity for days, I was suprised (maybe not) that no one touched the dried fruits, nuts, seeds, natural almond and peanut butter, the 100% whole grain crackers, the pure fruit jam and jellies, the salt free cans of beans, vegetables, the low sodium, water packed sardines, salmon, tuna and chicken breast, low sodium/fat canned soups, etc etc. > I even wrote up a PR " Heart Healthy Hurricane Survival Guide " that I sent out to all the media outlets but alas, no one was interested. I can post the list " as is " as of now, which is a very rough draft. Or we could wait a few days (or week) till it get polished and post the final " approved " version. Personally, I would wait the few days or so. BTW, if anyone on the list wants to contribute, I am open to suggestions for the healthiest, non perishable foods you would buy if you knew you were going to face a few days to a week or more with no power etc. Jeff

Guest guest
Canned food (doesn't need water or cooking) - mostly things you'd eat anyway so you can cycle them throughout the year. salmon, beans, green beans, mixed veggies, fruit. Ready to eat cereal - low sodium (mini wheats). I don't like flame inside the house, so I use fluorescent lanterns, flashlights, and a gas grill outside. A really nice thing is a 12v converter ($20) you can hook to a car battery and run a TV/ radio or a laptop. Small TV's go for 100$. The only nice NOAA weather radio is included in a CB radio in my van. And get this, a "old fashioned" telephone that doesn't need electrical power to call out.
