carb counting, was Re: Re: carbs in whey

What reference do you use for counting carbs? I find the USDA database

very cumbersome for checking foods daily.

Since our discussion of whey shakes and carbs, I've been adding up my

daily carbs and finding I have slipped far from what I should be doing.

And I went back and re-read my Atkins, and find the carb level suggested

even for maintenance is lower than I remembered.

I eat a limited diet, and prepare food at home, so the USDA database

is easy to consult. I very rarely eat in restaurants, or eat take out

foods. I almost never eat food unless I prepare it. Some foods like

ketchup list carb content on the label. Regular ketchup is tooo high

(5 grams per tablespoon). Low carb ketchup has 2 grams, but lacks

flavor. So I grind up stewed tomato & blend with low carb ketchup

(along with seaweed powder which makes it thicker) to get a flavorful

low carb ketchup

Whey also lists carbs on label. I am working to cut back, then

eliminate flavored whey because it has too many carbs, and raises my

blood sugar. I am using less and less flavored whey in proportion to

unflavored to reduce carbs. Once my current flavored whey is finished

off, I hope to use unflavored whey exclusively.
