Guest guest
I take Carbonyl Iron, recommended by Vitalady (a gastric bypass patient who has done lots of research regarding absorbability of supplements for folks like us). I did my own research, too, using the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) for Nutritional Supplements. The carbonyl form of iron is highly absorbable and bioavailable to the body. Carbonyl iron has a much lower incidence of side effects, such as nausea and constipation. The brand I have is Sundown. I have't looked for it locally yet. I had switched about 1 1/2 - 2 months before my recent labs and did see a small increase. I'm on the low side of normal right now, but had been anemic prior. Guest guest
I take Easy Iron from Vitamin world. It's iron glycinate, which is very easy on the stomach (and non-constipating), and contains a few other ingredients that supposedly make it more absorbable. Steve Iron , I saw your post about the Chromagen Forte and am going to pass it along to my PCP. Does anyone else take iron that has seen their anemia improve? If so, what is the med? I've been taking Fe- tininc twice daily for 5 months and my iron levels and hemoglobin are still dropping. My PCP is trying to find something I can absorb more easily. Thanks so much. Guest guest
I am taking the Chromagen Forte - it is prescription and I think with my insurance it was 55.00 for 3 month supply. There is not a generic for this. It is very absorbable because it is a gel with liquid inside! My Dr was very happy to give me the script for it! I havent had a problem being tired since a weeks or so after I started it, so it must be working! My levels were great at last check Steph P > > , I saw your post about the Chromagen Forte and am going to > pass it along to my PCP. Guest guest
I have been taking Chromagen Forte for about 8 months now and it keeps my Iron levels good, however, my Doc wants me to keep taking it. I also had trouble with malabsorption of my thyroid meds. Had to go up a couple notches in doseage to keep it at the right levels. Guest guest
Suggest taking your iron with vitamin c. Increases the absorption. Avoid taking it with anything else for at least 2 hours before or after. in SC Congrats on the twins!!

Guest guest
Pregnancy?? That would be interesting with my kids aged 35 and 37. However, life has so many new surprises since my band " installed " in May 2005. I've learned to expect anything, especially after 3 plastic surgeries. I'm in a total identity crisis!!?? Guest guest
Great info! most people don't understand that good protein sources, are usually NOT also good IRON sources. We need RED MEAT (ground is fine), turkey (better than chicken) and certain types of seafood, as well as spiniach and otheriron-containg veggies. and fortified cereal grains. See the IRON documnt in the files here for more info... Sandy r > > I can't emphasis enough about getting our nutrition levels checked. I > assumed LapBanders get all they need. Guest guest
200mgs daily. If VERY low, you can take 200mgs x 3 daily to get you quickly boosted. However, don't forget to take 3/4000mgs (or even 5000mgs Vitamin C at the same time, with orange juice) Luv - Sheila Evening all, just how much ferrous sulphate should we be taking if we think we're low ? thank ye, julia No virus found in this incoming message. Guest guest
Taking iron worries me because it makes my blood thicker and I dont need that to happen, but its clearly something needed so Im sort of stuck what to do now. Will have to try and look into it more closely from the viscosity aspect. Carole > > 200mgs daily. If VERY low, you can take 200mgs x 3 daily to get you quickly > boosted. Guest guest
Hmmm! Can't help there but I am sure somebody will come along if they know different. Dr Peatfield recommends using Spatone which might be more gentle. Read up about this Carole http://www.spatone.com/ Luv - Sheila Taking iron worries me because it makes my blood thicker and I dont need that to happen, but its clearly something needed so Im sort of stuck what to do now. Guest guest
Hi julia, On the Spatone theme, my iron was only about twenty last year, since it was reccomended to me on here by a kind person I have been taking one sachet per day and it is now fifty odd. It has no bad effects on my stomache and it says on the box you can have two sachets if pregnant so I recon it is very safe. Dr P says the stuff on the NHS is a very rough and crude form of iron. Best Wishes Stephie > > > > > Evening all, >  > just how much ferrous sulphate should we be taking if we think we're low ? >  > thank ye, >  > julia >
Guest guest
Yes, I'd be interested to know that too. The cheapest I have found so far is on Amazon because of free delivery, but it will take about 6 weeks to arrive. :-( Has anyone tried Iron EAP2 from Biocare? It is also supposed to be gentle on the stomach, though I notice it is only 15 mg elemental iron. Spatone is only 5 mg per sachet. Still, you have to go with something you can tolerate. Guest guest
Drinking lots of water might help viscosity in blood. I was told that before a blood test - even a fasting one - one should drink plenty of water because of that. Guest guest
yes Miriam, It was from a boots chemist store, you must make sure they realise it is a vitamin you are buying, it was the pharmacist in our local shop who put me wise to ordering three at once. that way they only ask you to pay for two. PS it might have gone up slightly in price to seven pound something now as I bought mine about six weeks ago. Stephie > > Do you mean from a Boots store, or online somewhere? Guest guest
Thanks for this, I bought one box of 28 Spatone sachets a few weeks ago and didn't notice any offers. I saw this thread and went to Boots; and now I've got my three boxes for the price of two :0) Make sure you ask if there aren't any out though, as I think a lot of Boots branches don't bother to fill the shelf up if they don't have to when things are on offer. Guest guest
Yes, there was no SpaTone on the shelf at my branch of Boots, and they could only find 2 packs in the new stock waiting to be put out. So no 3 for 2 offer there! Guest guest
The problem with Spa Tone in Boots is they only have room on the shelf for a few boxes so as soon as somone buys some (3 for 2) they have to restock the shelf. The big box of sachets is much bigger than any of the other supplements but they only give it the same amount of room as for the tubs of vitamins or the like. I have bought 3 for 2 Spatone twice and had to ask for it both times because the narrow space on the shelf where it should have been was empty. Shame they only managed to find two boxes in stock when you shopped for it, better luck next time. CJ
