Hi,

I joined this group for help in preparing for the PTCE ~ and I used the site

extensively. I passed the test and got my certificate about a week ago. My

score was amazing, so I highly recommend using this site as part of your study

prep!

My question is about finding a job as a CPhT. I live near Houston ~ with one of

the largest medical centers in the country, but EVERY tech job I find posted

says at least " 1 year hospital experience preferred " . I don't have that, but I

did attend a one year tech certificate program at a community college. I'm also

NPTA certified for IV/Admixture and Compounding.

Do entry-level techs have better luck focusing their " new " resume on their

education, their new certifications, their internships or their prior work

history. I am coming from an " office " background ~ lots of customer service,

but zero medical experience. I have submitted resumes and apps in various

formats, focusing on different strengths, but how can I overcome the one-year

experience hurdle if nobody hires to let me get the year??

Thanks for any help ~ and relax before you take the exam!!

Thank you cocacolakid for your appreciation and letting others know of your

success!

Congratulations!

Regarding your resume:

In most cases play up what you have that others do not have that makes YOU stand

out.

So you have

1. Education

2. Externship exerience

3. SPECIAL Education with a special Certificate from NPTA in Compounding

Go to my Career or Resume Building and look at the ways you can do your resume

to stand out.

I would place Education then

Externship place dates and what you did

then Special Certificate (did you have some experience or mock labs with that)

and

then

State Registration and PTCB certification

So in many ways it is chronological for you as well!

Make sure to add the associations that you belong to

And I would say this: it will be difficult to break into the hospital pharmacy.

But you may write a letter of introduction of you or have someone else (former

teacher) write one of you stressing your certificate in compounding etc.

In addition, you might try community or retail for the time being about 6 months

then transfering. If you can get into a Kaiser you might find being promoted

from with in a good way to go from outpt to in pt.

I would secure any pharm position NOW and work to get experience and then start

looking in 6 months or so ----you willl have MORE experience to put on your

resume.

Hope this helps!

Respectfully,

Hi ,

Thanks for posting this, as I am going to be in the same relative boat that you

are in very soon.

I just recently passed the PTCE this past Friday, and have since registered for

the Dec 5 & 6th NPTA IV Admixture training.

I currently work as a flight Attendant for the US Department of Defense, but

have about 6 years of experience in the OR before I started flying. This

experience is quite dated however.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the NPTA program! Currently Im waiting for

my books and materials to ship, but pretty anxious to get started.

Best of luck to you with your job search!
