I took a class at boston reed to get certified. I am now a registered pharmacy

tech. My question is if I am registered does that mean I have to still take the

PTCB.

Dear ,

Short answer NO YOU DO NOT have to be BOTH Registered and Certified in the state

of CA. However, if you are living/working in another state I would have to check

on it, as all states have their own laws.

If you are in a state that requires PTCB then you must be nationally certified

by PTCB in addition to meeting other requirements.

IF you are in California the law is that you MUST be Registered (licensed). You

MAY be PTCB certified, but you do not have to be.

To become registered:

1. You can either take, PASS, and prove results of the PTCB exam

OR

2. You may attend graduate from a state approved pharmacy technician

program/school, and the school sends in proof of meeting graduation requirements

on your behalf.

You do not need both education and PTCB (both) to get registered (licensed).

However MOST pharmacists and pharmacies in the state of CA are asking for both

registration along with proof of passing PTCB/certification.

A goal of many educators, like myself, is to have ONE national standard of

education and training along with a federal law requiring formal both education,

training and certification.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks Fred!

Dear All,

I just would like to " clarify " before we get questions about Boston . If you

attend Boston or ANY OTHER SCHOOL and your state approves it as a school

that qualifies you for STATE registration, then you may get STATE registered as

a pharmacy technician. This statement applies for any other program as well:

Everest, Kaplan, etc

To further expound upon what Fred is refering to:

If you, , are refering to a document issued BY Boston as a

'Registration'then that document will not suffice for or as a STATE

registration, but may be used (in some states) to qualify you to get a STATE

registration. In other words if you are talking about a diploma or certification

of graduation from Boston (or any othe school) THEN in some states such as

California, you would then take the PTCB exam OR send PROOF of your graduation

from Boston (reigstration/certification or graduation or diploma) to the

state of CA for your STATE Registration, which is sometimes called a license.

No pharmacy can hire you without the STATE Registration.

I hope this along with Fred's statements better clarify what you need to become

a Registered Technician. MUCH depends upon your STATE'S Rules an Regulations for

Pharmacy Technicinas (laws).

Feel free to ask more questions on this topic if you have them or if I did not

answer your question adequately.
