I am reviewing for the certification right now and I need your help

answering this problems... I have my own answer but for some reason I

am not sure if it is right or worng... Hope you can help me. THANKS!

1. How much glacical acetic acid (100%) is required to prepare 1L of

0.25% acetic acid soak?

A) .025mL

B) 2.5mL

C) 25mL

D) 250mL

X vol of 100% = 1 L of 0.25%

Read this as:

How many ml of 100% are equal to 1 Liter of 0.25% glacial acetic acid?

X vol x 100 % = 1000 ml x 0.25%

X vol x 100 % = 1000 ml x 0.25%

100%....................................100%

X vol x 100 % = 1000 ml x 0.25%

100%....................................100%

X vol = 1000 ml x 0.25%

………………….…..100%

X vol = 2.5 ml

Add 2.5 ml of 100% Glacial Acetic Acid to enough water to make 1L of

0.25%

2. A prescription order reads: " Potassium chloride 10% (40mEq/30mL).

Dispense: 240mL. Sig: one step tsp t.i.d. " How many mEq of KCI are to

be taken daily?

A) 10mEq

B) 20mEq

C) 30mEq

D) 45mEq

First of all I do not know what is meant by the word `step' in the

Sig.

Is this a typo or copy error? I am assuming this is from Techlectures

book. It looks much like Joe's work. Is this true?

One teaspoonful three times a day

Means 5 ml three times a day.

5ml x 3 = 15 ml per day.

Ratio /Proportion

40mEq/30 ml = X mEq / 15 ml

40 x 15 /30= x mEq

20mEq is the answer.

By the way this easily could have read: How many days will this

quantity (prescription) last?IAlso known as days supply.

Answer: If you are a given (dispensed) 240 ml that has 240ml/(5

ml/dose) = 48 doses.

48 doses/(3 doses/day) = 16 days

3. Dopamine 800 mg in 250 mL D5W at 4 mcg.kg/min is ordered for a

180 lb

patient. The concentration of the solution is:

A) 3200 mcg/mL

B) 320 mcg/mL

C) 32 mcg/mL

D) 3.2 mcg/m

Answer is A.

For some unknown reason the author wants the [C] in mcg / ml instead

of mg/ml as per usual. So this is an exercise in conversion skill.

Concentration of any solution is independent from what the

prescription is for.

800mg/250ml = (800mg x 1000 mcg/mg) / 250ml

800,000 mcg/250 ml

Reduces to: 3200 mcg/ml

Answer is A) 3200 mcg/mL

4. The pharmacy receives an order for a single dose of 0.175 g

chloral

hydrate syrup, which is available as 500 mg/5mL. What volume will the

patient receive?

A) 1.75 mL

B) 7.5 mL

C) 17.5 mL

D) 75 mL

500mg/5ml is the same as 0.5gm/5ml

0.175 g is the same as 1750 mg

Best NOT to use decimals, so I will use the 1750 mg dose and

500mg/5ml concentration.

Ratio/proportion set up

500mg/5ml = 175 mg/X ml

Cross multiply:

5 x 175 / 500 = Xml

Answer: A) 1.75 ml

5. An extemporaneous formulation requires a drug concentration of 25

mg/mL. With 100mg tablets and a total volume of 600 mL, how many

tablets would be needed to prepare this formula?

A) 100 tablets

B) 150 tablets

C) 200 tablets

D) 250 tablets

25 mg/1 ml = X mg/ 600ml

25 x 600/1 = 15,000mg

Recall: 1 tab = 100mg

Ratio/proportion:

1 tab/100mg = X tab/15,000 mg

15,000/100 = 150 tablets

Answer: B) 150 tablets

Another way is this: 25mg is ¼ or one-quarter of a tablet

0.25 tab/1ml = X tabs/600ml

0.25 x 600/1 = X tabs

150 tabs = B) 150 tablets

6. An IV admixture containing hepain 25,000 units in 250 mL D5W is

running at 800 units per hour. At this flow rate, the volume of IV

solution delivered at the end of 16 hours will be:

A) 1.28 mL

B) 12.8 mL

C) 20 mL

D) 128 mL

250ml/25,000 units X 800 units/1hr X 16 hr =

128 ml

Answer: D) 128 ml (per 16 hours)

7. A physician writes a prescription for 1 gallon of sterile

normal

saline irrigation to be dispensed to a patient. The pharmacy stocks

only 1000mL bottles. How many bottles should be dispensed?

A) 4 bottles

B) 5 bottles

C) 10 bottles

D) 20 bottles

Answer: A) 4 bottles

1 gallon = 128 ounces

1 gallon = 4 quarts

128 ounces =

1 gallon = 128 ounces x 30 ml/ounce = 3840 ml

or approximately 4000ml or approximately = 4 liters

Dispense in a 4 Liter container or 4 x 1000ml containers or 4 x

1Liter containers

Hoope these explanations help. Showing ratio proportion is difficult

on computer/internet html text. However I did try to use a linear

setup. You can re-writeit vertically.

Let me know if you have different answers .
