I am posting a link to some information regarding the tomato salmonella outbreak and I am also posting the main highlights of this article. Louisiana creole tomatoes harvested in Louisiana are not affected by the recent salmonella outbreak and are safe to consume, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday. Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and homegrown tomatoes are likely not the source of the outbreak, federal officials said. Also not associated with the outbreak are raw red Roma, red plum and round red tomatoes from Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Belgium, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, Netherlands and Puerto Rico. Mc's, Wal-Mart and other U.S. chains have halted sales of some raw tomatoes as federal health officials work to trace the source of a multistate salmonella food poisoning outbreak. The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday issued an alert to consumers after a salmonella outbreak was linked to large uncooked tomatoes in New Mexico and Texas. Pork belly prices are under pressure as interest in the BLT, the popular summer bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, could dip after an outbreak of salmonella poisoning in nine U.S. states, with illnesses in two of them blamed on eating raw tomatoes. The US food industry allows the chlorination of its chickens to kill off bacteria, including salmonella. Veterinary experts from 26 of the 27 EU member states are opposed to poultry washed in chlorine and support an import ban on US chicken. An experiment to develop a salmonella vaccine aboard the US space shuttle Discovery could pave the way for a gush of commercial biotechnology research in space, NASA and biotech industry officials said Friday.
