Guest guest
Hi Jeanetta, I was looking at Intravenous solution calculation and got confused with D5W 500mL and D5W 250mL. Here is the example I was looking, Question:An order is given for D5W 250 mL with heparin 25000 IV at 750U/hr. Calculate the flow rate in mL/hr. Answer: (what they have given) 750U/hr X 500mL = 15mL/hr ---------- 25,000 I dont understand how they have used 500mL instead of 250mL. Can you please tell me what could be the reason for that.? Just one more Q that D5W means 5% Dextrose in How Many mL of Water?? Please let me know at your convenience. Thanks a lot Bhumika Vyas --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Try it now.
Guest guest
Feb 10, 2008 Dear Bhumika Vyas, This is an error on the part of the editor/authors of the book. All textbooks unfortunately contain errors especially those of Bhumika Vyasthe first 1-3 editions. This is because we are humans. Please let me/us know which book you are using. So that others using the same book can make the correction. You are doing VERY WELL when you can spot the error that you just did! Congrats! The answer should have been one-half of the answer that they printed in the book, because 250ml per hour is half of 15ml pr hour. It should look like this: 250 ml xxxxxxxxxx 750 units ------------ x --------- = 7.5 ml / hr 25,000 units xxxxxx 1 hr Ignore the ¡§x¡¦s¡¨ signs as I am using them as spacers because HTML Is not nice to mathematical problems. HOWEVER my tutorials are! ƒº Here is another way to set it up in the html of the site: 250 ml x 750 units / 25,000 units x 1hr = 7.5 ml/hr I do hope that this helps you. Respectfully, Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS Pharm Tech Educator Founder/Owner of this site: It would look like this on the site IF I did not use x's due to the o HTML spacing problem: 250 ml 750 units ------------ x --------- = 7.5 ml / hr 25,000 units 1 hr > > Hi Jeanetta, > > I was looking at Intravenous solution calculation and got confused with D5W 500mL and D5W 250mL. > > Here is the example I was looking, > Question:An order is given for D5W 250 mL with heparin 25000 IV at 750U/hr.
