Guest guest
HI Tammi! I do not know if thre are other pieces of information in your math problem such as a {C} or concentration of the progesterone powder. But if the progesterone powder is 100% progesterone then this will work. a)show all calculations required to compound this suppository prescription. I do not see the need to show any calculations! I would say just weigh out the ingredients. UNLESS as I stated above there is a concentration of the progesterone powder that you did not include in this scenario. I am not using ratio/proportion method here, but rather dimensional analysis or string conversion. Why? because I have to leave my home right now for most of the day, and it takes a while to do ratio/proportion on the posts to set it up just right. HTML is not kind to the set up! But when I get back I will post this same math in using a ratio/proportion method. Active Ingredient = progesterone 25mg/supp x 100 suppositories= 2500mg 2500mg x 1gm/1000mg = 2.5 gm Inactive ingredient = polybase 245gm /100 supp = 2.45 gm/supp 2.45 gm x 1000mg/gm = 2450 mg /supp b)describe the compounding procedure for this prescription. Since the recipe or formula is given. Weigh out the TWO individual ingredients. Using a mortar and pestle triturate (grind) the WEIGHED powdered progesterone to a fine powder. Perform gradual geometric dilutions of the powder to the polybase Place the compounded mixture in the suppository molds. Allow to harden. Wrap individual suppositories. c)If half a suppository is required for 3 days, how should the suppositories be divided? One half suppository for three days ( I am interpreting this to be one-third of half of the suppository is to be administered to the patient each of day for three days.) 1/2 suppository for three doses so 1/2 of the suppository divided by three equals 1/3 of 1/2 = 1/6 of the whole suppository Each 1/6 of the suppository is to be administered each day for three days. Once could weigh the suppository and divide it by 6 for the exact same amount per dose. But I doubt a nurse would do this or have access to a scale. Most nurses would divide one supp by 2 then divide one of the halves by three. On day four one-half of the suppository would be remaining. ANY other suggestions out there are welcome! Any compounding experts (someone who compounds daily?) out there? I do hope this helps, Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS Founder/Owner of this site > > In class we just finished are third week of calculations:dosages.
