Guest guest
I wish to be taken off the mailing list Darrell [ ] Questions about Melatonin Hi everyone, Has anyone had any success with melatonin? I am thinking about asking the neuro about it. But before I do, tell me what you all know about mixing it with Depakote and Zonegran. Thanks, Tracey
Guest guest
Tracey, When my daughter, , was on Trileptal I had to give it to her because she was not sleeping well and it helped her sleep much better, but now that she's on Zonegran, she seems to be sleeping well so I have not been giving it to her. If I ever need to give it to her again, I will definitely do that because it works. Guest guest
Grace, How did the Melatonin help? Did it decrease seizure activity? I spoke with the neuro today in regards to the melatonin and she said that there is a study going on in India but 's seizures are related to the transition from the third to the fourth sleep cycle and melatonin does not help with this??? Thanks for your reply. Tracey
Guest guest
Tracey, Melatonin seemed to help sleep better and she didn't move as much, but I also found that she slept even better the following day when I didn't give her the melatonin, which is what happens to me if I have a glass of wine before I go to bed, I sleep pretty good, but I sleep even better the next day (without drinking any wine). I also found that I get a better night sleep if I drink a glass of milk before going to bed. You might want to try the milk if you feel the melatonin is not doing the job. I also just read a book which stated that Valerian is a great sleep aide, anyone know much about it? As far as melatonin helping with the seizures, I don't know about that. One of 's triggers are lack of sleep amd it probably would have helped except that she was on Trileptal which was causing her seizures to increase so it was hard to tell and I haven't used melatonin lately since she seems to be sleeping fine right now since we changed AEDs. Guest guest
Grace, does drink a glass of milk before bed and it helps her fall asleep but does nothing for the seizures. After the sleep study done 5/10/04 we are once again going up on the meds which I am not comfotable with. But she had ~42 seizure disharges which result in almost no seizure but the focal point is still firing which warrants an increase in meds. Thanks for the info Grace. Guest guest
I had not heard of any issues with melatonin and autoimmune conditions... I take 3 mg a few minutes before bedtime. I do not use it continuously; I will use it for a couple of weeks, then stop. Often I will sleep well for quite a while before I need to take melatonin again. I think of it as retraining my body to sleep... when I first began using it I took it nightly for 3 or 4 months. Lately I feel groggy in the morning after taking the melatonin. That is new, never experienced that before. I really wonder if I'm just not rested enough and need to sleep longer. Melatonin is not a sleeping pill. It will allow you to sleep, but if you have a lot of discomfort or anxiety you will still find yourself awake. It's important to figure out why you can't sleep. Sometimes Tylenol at bedtime is as helpful as anything else... She is still waking up at least once or twice per night even though she is on LDN. When I received it I noticed on the label that it says people with autoimmune conditions should check with their doctors before taking it. Can anyone tell me what the potential problem is and also how much and how often you take it?Thanks in advance for your help.Diane
Guest guest
It is believe that melatonin boosts the immune system. From the web... However, it should be noted that melatonin's immune-boosting capacity may exacerbate autoimmune diseases and allergies, since these conditions involve an already overstimulated immune system. This possible connection remains the subject of investigation for several researchers > I ordered some melatonin for my roommate who has MS to take to help > her sleep.
