Guest guest
Dear Ms Treka, Due to the changes in our economy, with the recession we will see less jobs in all areas. HOWEVER that being said, medical is still the best bet for growth and open jobs for the next 10 yrs or so when the fog lifts you will be glad you made this choice. But we all need to know that most employers today will look for the most experienced to save money and time in training, since they too are penny pinching. But there are those that can not afford their wages and will be willing to train especially if they do have experienced techs already on staff who can share in the training of newbies. It will be up to you to sell yourself and what you as a newbie has to offer, should you be granted an interview. Since you have NO experience, I highly recommend that you get on board with a pharm tech agency in your area. During this difficult time financially for our country, an agency may be the 'friend' that you need in the job market. I found carreer staff Rx that posted an IV Tech position http://www.miracleworkers.com/INTL/JobSeeker/Jobs/JobDetails.aspx?Job_DID=J7X4VL\ 6BTSS755Y7ZF3 I also sent you a job ad. You may also find that you must be willing to take a prn or per diem or part time tech job to get experience. Andf there is NO reason why you can not go to retail pharmacies and introduce yourself the old fashioned way. Bring a copy of your resume and ask them how to apply for a job. The IDEA is to get them to THINK about YOU the next time there is an opening for a newbie tech. And your resume will already be there. Send a thank you not for their time and their help or just a pleasure to meet them. Any thing to make an impression so that they will recall you when there is an opening . Consider closed door pharmacies, insurance companies, managed care as well and central fill pharmacies. Don't WAIT for the right ad to appear, be a bit more proactive. The worse that can happen is they say they do not have time. Then leave a resume that is DIFFERENT than most (see my files) - so that when you leave and they look at it they will READ it because it looks somewhat different. I know it is difficult out there. Did you have labs and an externship? What school did you go to? Do they have a placement department or counselor who can help you? Please check your resume some times that needs some updating and improvement so that the second we find an ad that is for a newbie our resume will get our foot in the door. It isnot easy for anyone to find work in any specific field right now. Most of my students who have lost work during this economy, have been in the computer field. That is pretty saturated. So if you had decided to go into that field you would find that there are little jobs there as well right now. BUt when the fog lifts the field will still be saturated with computer specialists but not with medical healthcare workers. Again you made the right choice but it is a bad time. Do not let this discourage you. Get involved in local or state pharmacy associations or tech associations. And go to live CE and meet people who may be seeking a newbie tech or at least a tech who is interested to stay abreast of it all. I do hope this helps to pick up your spirits if nothing else. My heart goes out to you all. Respectfully, Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS Founder/Owner > > I passed my CPT exam over 3mo. ago and still haven't been able to find a job! I've applied for over 50 jobs and still nothing. Before I decided to obtain my certification as a Pharmacy Technician I checked out the job market and it seemed as if there were plenty jobs out there, but to my surprise those were for people whom already had previous experience. Well now I stuck wondering what's the purpose of going to school to better yourself if noone is willing to give you a chance. I wanted this so bad now it seems as if this was not only a waste of my time but of my money as well. OK I've vented enough now my question is were are the Pharmacy Technician jobs in the Memphis, Tennessee area that don't mind hiring new grads. Guest guest
I would wonder if there is something via the net that an employer is able to pull up that is killing your chances. My two doctors run an applicants' name through Google to see what pops up. Then a quick snoop run through Face Book and My Space. My BIL who also runs a small business does too. Next is a pass through the sex offender list, and the state list who is on parole. All this can be done free. The pharmacy I worked for did a back ground check for drug and drunk driving convictions on me. Some places pull credit scores. Some check if you owe back child support. It isn't fair, but see that your internet trail is squeaky clean as possible. My BIL did not hire a person that had her spring break photos that included sitting around a bong with buds getting high on her FB page. He considered that lack of good judgement since page was public. Any of his client parents could see that. So, do a net search on your self. Lock down, or better yet make a second FB page to share with your buddies and make it private. Do you blog on fringe issues? On let's trash my employer sites? Mommy blogs? A blog about your chronically ill family member? Let the employer find out any " issues " during the interview when you can explain them. Last example. My dentist didn't hire a really qualified applicant due to her church web site. She was the head of of a couple ministries that met MWF evenings. From 4-8 pm. That is the position he hoped to fill. He figured she could not drop any of those commitments, so her resume hit trash can. With an employers market, don't give them a reason to disqualify you before the interview. The job market is terrible, but making sure your net image is bland doesn't hurt. Guest guest
Yes Nan, It was on customer service. While true to the core, it was funny....fun to read. One just has to laugh sometimes at the situations that techs and pharmacists face with patients, nurses and doctors. Also I will place in the tutorial on Resume Building your information on checking your " Internet Image " Great stuff! I ALWAYS give credit to the originator and this is why I also seek permission. Do you want your full name and state with that credit? It will be in the File section and less likely to be found or used for internet fraud/ID theft OR do you want only your first name and the handle of your email lilbatz only? Thank you, Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS Founder/Owner copyrighted 7-31-11 PS Nan I removed your personal data for your 'internet safety'. too late to guard mine it has been out there too long, and long before we all had to worry or knew we had to worry. ButI always try to protect my members. > > > > > > I would wonder if there is something via the net that an employer is able to pull up that is killing your chances. > > > > > > My two doctors run an applicants' name through Google to see what pops up.
