Guest guest
Thank you Fred! You are a great source of historical information and facts! You are hereby considered the site's pharmacy historian ( I'll remain as the site historian). Yes I concur that hospital usually does pharmacy week and both do pharmacy day as the third Tuesday of the month! Thank you Fred for all you do! I can't tell the pharmacists to be especially nice to the techs on this day because I preach it throughout the year. No special education on this day. We do work on extra education and training with any new processes and information that come up throughout the year. Guest guest
Here is the email I just received from Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists about this week's activities: " FSHP Salutes Health-System Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians FSHP acknowledges the valuable services of the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who work in inpatient, outpatient, home-care and long-term-care settings to help patients make the best use of their medications. During National Hospital & Health-System Pharmacy Week, October 19-25, 2008 and National Technician Day, October 21, 2008 we want to underscore the many new and vital roles pharmacists and pharmacy technicians play in patient care. Patients receive better care, outcomes are improved and unnecessary costs are reduced when pharmacists are directly involved in medication management decisions. Pharmacists advise prescribers on the best drug choices, participate in multi-disciplinary patient-care teams and educate patients and their caregivers on how to use their medications safely and effectively. Pharmacists have been able to take on enhanced patient-care roles because of a number of factors, including the deployment of highly trained pharmacy technicians. Pharmacy technicians provide vital supportive services from purchasing of pharmaceuticals and related supplies, compounding of sterile products, managing of drug distribution automation and technology to staff development and training programs for technician certification. We celebrate & thank you for your continued service in Florida’s Health Systems! FSHP members are invited to share their “Pharmacy Week Activities†with their colleagues via the FSHP Newsletter & Website. Please send photos or descriptions of your Pharmacy Week celebrations to Tamekia at the FSHP Office at tamekia@.... " At our hospital, we have a lot of activities planned - from games and puzzles with prizes for the whole staff to learn about the pharmacy dept, cards on the patient's trays encouraging them to ask to speak to pharmacists, food every day for pharmacy employees, etc. My role is planning the Technician Appreciation Day pot luck tomorrow where the pharmacists are bringing the food to feed the technicians for both day and evening shifts. We decided to not do gifts for the pharmacy employees this year but to put it into food and the prizes for the puzzles and games for the whole hospital, to use it as a PR project to help people at least realize we are there and to move towards helping them understand a bit more of what we do, what we know, the roles of techs and pharmacists, etc. for the future. It is scary how little other HCP really know about pharmacy much less the training and background we have. Thank you to all the technicians on this site! You make a huge difference in getting the word out about the importance of good education and training in the workplace, about what technicians can and should be, not satisfied with the status quo or how things used to be. Keep up the good work! Joy , PharmD. BCPS Shands Hospital at UF, Gainesville, FL.

Guest guest
Sorry for my typos! HOPEFULLY I corrected them all below: GREAT Job Jeanne! WE can ONLY try! Every year I try to educate the pharmacy retail setting community. It seems the hospitals do more than the local pharmacies around here. I had my students make 4 HAPPY PHARMACY TECHNICIAN DAY BANNERS. I split the class into 4 groups of 6. They rehearsed all possible scenarios: Busy Rx, nice RPh Busy Rx ,mean RPh Not so busy Rx, Nice RPh Not so busy Rx, mean RPh They each came up with a way to present the banner AND a copy of the PTCB greeting with the link to the Pill Pong. NONE of the pharmacies (two CVS and one Rite Aid and one Walgreen’s were doing anything for the techs! And only one was celebrating pharmacy week! Now two of these pharmacies are all within walking distance and the two are up to 2 miles away from the school. Two groups car pooled to those pharmacies. I have tried unsuccessfully for the last 5 years to get them to celebrate! I have the students do a follow up if they can commit to celebrating the tech day on a subsequent day! But most do not! WE have brought them candy in the past. But sadly I am tired of spending money on them. It’s like if the chain does not tell them to then they won’t do it! They forget the whole damn week is pharmacist week, some RPh’s sound jealous or mad that there is a tech day! The goal is multi-fold: 1. Determine and survey how many Rx’s in the area that we visit ARE celebrating, and HOW did they celebrate? What exactly did they do for the techs? Pharmacy as a whole? RPh’s? If they did not INFORM them of the history of Pharmacy Month, Pharmacist week, Pharmacy Tech Day. 2. Find out if our previous visit the year before made a/the difference this year. (What impact did our visit have?). 3. IF they are not celebrating, then ASK them to commit to celebrating tech day within the month or week and pin them down to when and how they will do it. GET them to do it in the next few days. RETURN to checkup to see if the did! 4. IF they will not commit to celebrating this year to get them to commit to celebrating NEXT year! Each year they have not gotten any better in the LAST 5 years. The SAME 4 – 6 pharmacies! Each year I keep trying, but really if the Chain is not going to endorse it then what affect can I have, can my students have? I do have a student graduate at a hospital who was able to affect a change, by celebrating even though the hospital pharmacy never had in the past. This year they all looked forward to it and all participated. So it only takes one person. And I am honored to be part of that change as I taught my student. This give sme hope for the pharmacies mentioned above! Here at work my BOSS and OWNER celebrated the DAY AFTER BECAUSE they had several big meetings and could not participate. But everyone signed the four banners that were delivered! The next day my boss/owners bought us pizza and made a banner for us! The banner read: HAPPY TECHNICIAN DAY AFTER! I gave out pens and goodies that I got from the CSHP convention and bags to all the pharm tech students AND the nursing students! WE had a great time and we are still celebrating! Students ask if they can have an extra 5 minutes for break because it is pharmacy week and now month! Thanks for sharing everyone! Please tell us how you all celebrated! So i gave them a little history. So what i did, i brought in a panini grill and makings for the sandwich and we all grilled panini's. They loved it, then i brought in donuts another day. Guest guest
Thank you! Next yera we plan to start early in September. We will passout history of the Associations, the history of Pharmacy Month, Week and Pharm Tech Day. Students will do the back ground check and plan the flyers. The Month of October the first week we will distribute and ask them to commit to celebrating pharmacist week and also Tech day. We will ask permission to come on Tech Day to wish them a great day (with the real reason being to see if they followed through). We hope to affect change in a better way next year. Tomorrow students go out to see what happened since they were there on Tech Day. Any 'small' change in the right direction is a better change than no change. If we want a change we have to do it ourselves! For my weekly quiz I put a bonus question on the test “What is special about today?” About ½ my class got the correct answer. I then bought cookies and passed them out to my students. At another school I worked at I tried to get them to make a big deal about it but it always ended up with me doing more work and disrupting my class with no real benefits. I stopped mentioning it and started doing something privately. Perhaps someday we can get our state and other state governors to acknowledge the day. Remember every journey stats 1 step at a time after enough time you will eventually get there so lets continue to spread the word and at least appreciate ourselves! Julette Barta CPhT, BSIT, MA Ed.
