Last Minute Math Help Assistance Needed

Hi All ...

I'm busy doing my final reviewing/studying this weekend for PTCB. I'm taking it

tomorrow! :-0

I've run across a math problem and I'm drawing a blank on how to solve it.

I scanned the tutorials and didn't seem to find a subject that matched the

problem.

I'm probably a bit brain-fried from studying so much the past few days so

forgive me if I missed something in the tutorials that would help me with this.

I know what the answer is to the problem (I have answer key to the reviewer

questions) but I'm drawing a blank as to how to obtain the answer.

Q: If 15 g of hydrocortisone 1% ointment are combined with 30 g of a

hydrocortisone 2.5% ointment, what is the percentage of hydrocortisone in the

final product?

A: 1.25% ... (that's the answer according to the reviewer answer key ... but I'm

not sure how to arrive at the answer)

I'm sure I'll feel like a lop once someone explains how to do this. I've done

problems like this before when I was in class but like I said, I'm totally

drawing a blank here. I hope I don't do that tomorrow when I take the exam! :-0

Dear Zaldamo,

I believe your book has an error in it. I believe the answer is 2%

Doing an aligation backwards will give you the answer:

================X

2.5%============---- x 45 = 30 gram of 2.5%

================1.5

=======Z%======

================Y

1%=============---- x 45 = 15 gram of 1%

===============1.5

========================================

Solve individual algebraic statements and plug back in the original

alligation to check answers.

X

---- x 45 = 30 gram

1.5

1.5==== X=============== 1.5

----- x ----- x 45 x = 30 gram x ----

45====1.5=============== 45

Answer is X = 1

Y

---- x 45 = 15 gram

1.5

1.5==== X=============== 1.5

----- x ----- x 45 x = 15 gram x ----

45====1.5=============== 45

Answer is Y= 0.5

Plug back into the equation:

================1

2.5%============---- x 45 = 30 gram of 2.5%

================1.5

=======Z%======

===============0.5

1%=============---- x 45 = 15 gram of 1%

===============1.5

========================================

Calculate

2.5 - 1 = 1.5

Calculate

2.5% - Z% = 0.5

2.5 - 0.5 = Z%

2% = Z%

Calculate

2% - 1% = 1%

Plug calculated numbers back into the equation:

================1

2.5%============---- x 45 = 30 gram of 2.5%

================1.5

=======2%======

===============0.5

1%=============---- x 45 = 15 gram of 1%

===============1.5

========================================

Hope this helps you in time,

Looking forward to your report how it all went today.

Hi Jeanetta ...

Thanks for the assistance with the percentage problem.

Although I have a rough time seeing the formula with the dashes and such. Stinks

that it's tough to set these things up via email messages.

It doesn't surprise me there was an error on the reviewer answer key. The

reviewers this question was on are a set of printed sheets from instructor with

all sorts of various questions/problems.

I've found other errors in answers on the sheets and previously brought them to

his attention so he could correct them.

Reality is really setting in ... my PTCB exam is just a few hours away! :-0

I've studied a bit again this morning but I'm a firm believer that you can " over

study " and when things start to jumble up a bit, it's time to ease up on the old

brain.

Now it's time to relax a bit and just get mentally prepared to focus on one

question/problem at a time and do the best I can do with the knowledge I

possess.

Good Luck to anyone taking the exam real soon!

You are very welcome!

I plan on putting in my files section if I have not done so already.

I will clean up the lines.

Yes you need some down time, rest and relaxation before testing along

with some complex carbohydrates (NOT sugar) brain loves sugar but it

can crash with candy and such. Bread, potato, pita, tortilla

macaronic/pasta etc works best. You can jump start with a piece of

chocolate candy, but not more than two Hershey kisses worth, and only

if you have eaten complex carbos. Otherwise no candy!

Brain loves sugar and oxygen.

Rest and breathing exercises gives more oxygen!
