AAPT Announcement Re: National Pharm Tech Day

At our hospital we are having a special lunch for the staff and

emphasizing that it is Pharmacy Technician Day. I can't tell the

pharmacists to be especially nice to the techs on this day because I

preach it throughout the year. No special education on this day. We do

work on extra education and training with any new processes and

information that come up throughout the year.

Our lunch is for the whole staff, emphasizing the importance of

technicians and tech day. No gifts for the techs this year - budgets are

too tight.

I believe this whole idea started with a pharmacist week, not just 1

day. APhA (retail) has changed it to Oct as pharmacist month. ASHP

(hospital) continues with pharmacy week, the 3rd full week in Oct.

The Client that I am staffing now, it's a small mom and pop type of

pharmacy and they have just the one pharmacist. He and the owners

didn't know that it was pharmacy week and that Tuesday was Pharmacy

Technician day, the two techs even said " really? there is a pharmacy

technician day " . So i gave them a little history.

So what i did, i brought in a panini grill and makings for the

sandwich and we all grilled panini's. They loved it, then i brought

in donuts another day. Then i stopped...it just didn't seem

appreciative!

oh well, we had fun grilling our sandwiches!

GREAT Job Jeanne!

WE can ONLY try!

Every year I try to educate the pharmacy retail setting  community. It seemsthe

hospitals do moe

thanthe local pharmacies around here.

I had my students may 4 HAPPY PHARMACY TECHNICIAN DAY

BANNERS. I split the class into 4 groups of 6. They rehearsed all possible

scenaris:

Busy Rx, nice RPh

Busy Rx ,mean RPh

Not so busy Rx, Nice RPh

Not so busy Rx, mean RPh

 

They each came up with a way to present the banner AND a

copy of the PTCB greeting with the link to the Pill Pong.

NONE of the pharmacies (two CVS and one Rite Aid and one

Walgreen’s were doing anything for the techs! And only one was celebrating

pharmacy week!  

 

Now two or these pharmacies are all within walking distance

and the two are up to 2 miles away from the school. Two groups car pooled to

those

pharmacies.

 

I have tried unsuccessfully for the last 2 years to get them

to celebrate! I have the students do a follow up if they can commit to

celebrating the tech day on a subsequent day! But most do not! WE have brought

them candy in the past. But sadly I am tired of spending money on them. It’s

like if the chain does not tell them to then they won’t do it!  They forget the

whole damn week is

pharmacist week, some RPh’s sound jealous or mad that there is a tech day!

 

He goal is multifold:

1.  

Determine and survey how many Rx’s in the area that we visit

ARE celebrating, and HOW did they celebrate? What exactly did they do for the

techs? Pharmacy as a whole? RPh’s? If they did not INFORM them of  the history

of Pharmacy Month, Pharmacist

week, Pharmacy Tech day.

2.  

Find out if our previous visit the year before made a/the

difference this year. (What impact did our visit have?).

3.  

IF they are not celebrating, then ASK them to commit to

celebrating tech day within the month or week and pin them down to when and how

they will do it. GET them to do it in the next few days. RETURN to checkup to

see if the did!

4.  

IF they will not commit to celebrating this year to get them

to commit to celebrating NEXT year!

 

Each year they have not gotten any better in the LAST 5

years. The SAME 4 – 6 pharmacies!

Each year I keep trying, but really if the Chain is not

going to endorse it then what effect can I have, can my students have?

 

I do have a student graduate at a hospital who was able to affect

a change, by celebrating even though the hospital pharmacy never had in the

past. This year they all looked forward to it and all participated. So it only

takes one person. And I am honored to be part of that change as I taught my

student.

 

Here at work my BOSS and OWNER celebraTED THE day after BECAUSE they had

several big meetings and could not participate. But everyone signed the four

banners that were delivered! The next day my boss/owners bought us pizza and

made a banner for us!

I gave out pens and goodies that I got from the CSHP convention and bags to all

the pharm tech students AND the nursing students!  

WE had a great time and we are still celebrating! Students ask if they can have

an extra 5 minutes for break because it is pharmacy week and now month!

I like your suggestions. If we want a change we have to do it ourselves!

For my weekly quiz I put a bonus question on the test “What is special about

today?” About ½ my class got the correct answer. I then bought cookies and

passed them out to my students.

At another school I worked at I tried to get them to make a big deal about

it but it always ended up with me doing more work and disrupting my class

with no real benefits. I stopped mentioning it and started doing something

privately. Perhaps someday we can get our state and other state governors to

acknowledge the day. Remember every journey stats 1 step at a time after

enough time you will eventually get there so lets continue to spread the

word and at least appreciate ourselves!
