Guest guest
I was given a muscle relaxer for a back sprain. Today I can't walk. Does anyone know if muscle relaxers can worsen MS symptoms?
Guest guest
Connie, considering that your leg, back, and ab muscles may be weakened to begin with, relaxing them with meds may be just enough to keep you from walking. I've used flexeril in the past and finally had to quit because it makes my staggering gait so much worse. Even at the very small doses I had used to ease the stiffness in my upper body the flexeril made me feel weak all over. When it wore off I was back to my normal drunken sailor walk. Hang in there, and we'll hope for the best for you. I'm so sorry you're going through this scary time. ----- Original Message ----- From: CK Connie King (1452) low dose naltrexone Sent: Saturday, June 12, 2004 7:59 AM Subject: [low dose naltrexone] Muscle Relaxers I was given a muscle relaxer for a back sprain. Years ago my neurologist and a physiotherapist I know worked together on a project evaluating Baclofen. They discovered that it was most beneficial to their patients at 5mg (half a tablet) four to six times a day. It was found that a very low, gradual dose was more beneficial than the usual recommended starter dose of three 10mg tablets a day. Some of their patients had previously needed 60mg a day. At that level it was very difficult to reduce the dose without problems. The method they used was to gradually change to Zanaflex and then back to Baclofen at a much lower dose. The first time I took Baclofen it was prescribe by my GP at the " standard " 30mg a day. It was a disaster. My legs would not support me for more than a few seconds. I stopped taking Baclofen without running it down slowly. My spasms returned but at least I could stand again. A month later my neurologist told me to try a much lower dose and suggested I take just half a tablet. That dose started to work quite well after about 15 minutes and lasted for about two hours. So, I now take half a tablet five or six times a day and I am free of spasms most of the time. The low dose protocol does not help with severe spasms. In my opinion the best drug for severe spasms is cannabis. Steve
Guest guest
I have taken three muscle relaxants---bacloflen,norflex and zanaflex. They all worked in reverse of the way that they were suppose to work. They all stiffened me up. I have been on tegretol since 1987 for my spasms. I know this drug is for seizures but not sure if it actually loosens my muscles. But it must cause it works to ease my spasms. But thanks to LDN I have been able to cut that medication in half. Thank you LDN. We found out later that yes Baclofen can cause this in some cases and his Dr. should have put him on a lower dose of it or some other med for his spasms. Since his Neuro was sixty miles away and very busy there was never a lot of follow up done. At this point we still never knew much about what to expect from M.S. Needless to say I never took any except for Robaxacet which I still take when I over do it which is often as the ldn makes me believe I can do more. This has it's good points and it's bad. My muscles are no longer deteriorating as I am pushing myself farther and harder, yet I don't know my limitations until it is to late. Your back sprain may be worse than you think and in my books that could be putting you over the edge of walk and don't walk. But I hope not! Guest guest
Hi, When I went to dr. for back pain last time, my dr prescribed the muscle relaxers at 1/2 the regular dose - because of CMT, but not sure of the exact reasoning behind it. Even at 1/2 dose, I would drive to work in the morning, then take the med. Usually by the time it was time to go home, it had worn off enough that driving home wasn't too bad. Maybe a reduced dose would be better?? Very good news that it's not RA or lupus. Hopefully the physical therapy will help quickly.
