There are good things about being a pharmacy tech!

Hi to the group

I went a little overboard yesterday

We are having a difficult winter, with several people leaving, one

out with a turn rotator cuff Extemely short staffed

I though about the advantages of being a knowledgble (wish I could

spell that) tech

You are doing a very important job without patient contact like

nursing

Pharmacists are some of the most intelligent and kind people I know

they do not have the inflated egos of some MD's

Pharmacist's appreciate their hard working, dedicated techs

Many pharmacist's have told me they appreciate me, and would miss me

if I left

So, the ability to help with patient care, the bonds formed with your

fellow tech;s and pharmacists, keep me coming back for more

I do not want to get out of this field, in our difficult time I feel

needed, appreciated, and working in a valuable profession

Jeanetta and Joe know how I feel about the people that count beans

for a living But it is the patients, nurses, techs and pharmacists I

work with that make this a rewarding career

Sinceely,

Jerry

Dear Gerald,

Thank you for your 'clarification' about your feelings of your career

choice!

WE all have a little 'neg' day every once in a while. So I guess that

was yersterday for you ('went overboard')! I am very proud of you for

placing here your decision {without my prodding :)} to amend your

first response in that you are proud to be working as a tech and that

you do feel appreciated.

Regarding your original comments about a slow change in the tech

world: You are correct change is slow. It just so happens that I too

could not see much light at the end of the tunnel in 2005 and 2006,

but with ASHP and APha announcing their plans for required education

for techs and PTCB certification by 2015 I think we are finally on

the right track.

We are now seeing one state, OHIO, look at education BEFORE

certification! (not passed yet but certqinly looking at it!) Finally

a state since Utah 1998, gets it right! Hopefully some other states

such as Colorado and New York will also do the same. There are still

so many states that have neither certification or education. In a

perfect world education would come first. PTCB TRIED to get this to

happen, but it did not happen. So the NEXT best thing was PTCE

certification alone. Now we see also ICPT ExCPT certification beinga

accepted by a few states too!

I hope along with many other techs and educators that:

1. All states that currently require certification, but do not

require education training or registration, begin to require all

three BEFORE 2015 (from and accreditied school)... why wait!?

2. All States that currently do not require cerification or

education/training or registration, enact state laws to require

education and training, certification and registration in that

specific order.

3. All states join forces and pay for an independant study on the two

or three or more current certification tests, (and pay for ongoing

studies of future tests due to new court ruling) for their equality,

comparability, equivalency so that states that have NO current

requirements make the right choice of one, both or all. {I say this

because we have seen it makes no difference that ASHP, APhA, PTEC or

NABP have suggested and recommended that only one exam be used

(PTCE); since there are states that are now allowing/requiring a

different exam to be used (ExCPT). So I think I would like to see

this before we have to try to undo any decisions (state laws) already

rendered. Trying to undo law is almost worse than trying to enact it

in the first place!].

Thanks for your input and especially for for admitting you are happy

as a tech as you " feel needed, appreciated, and (are) working in a

valuable profession " .

I think this leaves no doubt in the minds of many who come t this

site for education, mentoring and tutoring while preparing for and

studying for certification exams and to work in the REAL world.

It has been a really long time since you posted: Keep us updated on

your career!

Respectfully,

Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS
