Guest guest
Hello Deb, What do you mean you are too young? I am 40 soon to be 41 in August and I am having a LTKR June 16th. I have been putting of having it done since 2002 because my OS keep telling me I was too young and lets try some other options(injections, pt, etc). I finally put my foot down 3 weeks ago and told him I was getting it done and that he could do it or I would find another doctor that would.Luckly he agreed. My pain and the list of things I could not do was causing stress in my marriage and affecting my kids. I was to the point that I was needing anti-depression drugs because I of depression. I also had to have 50 cc of fuild withdrew from my right knee. I had and MRI of my right knee Saturday and tomorrow I see my OS to see if I will also be getting a scope on the right knee along with my TKR on my left. I also except the fact that I will probably need another knee in my life time. But right now what is important is my quality of life. I have 2 children ages 2 and 7 that need me to be able to go on walks with them. Take them to amusement parks and just plain be able to stand for any length of time. So I have to say I am looking forward to my surgery. I as if your OS will look at all options then you need to find another OS. MY OS has been great we have tried a lot of other things before finally doing the surgery. There are a lot of other surgery options out there. Good luck. Guest guest
Sorry to hear you are having problems. I don't think the problem is you are too young it sounds like your bones are weak. This link maybe something to look into. It may have options that can help you. It is about femur replacements. Best to do is to keep talking to your doctors, ask lots of questions, and hope they can come up with something. No one should have to be crippled and in pain. http://www.wnbc.com/drmaxgomez/8083651/detail.html From: "Deb" <stilldeb@...>Reply-Joint Replacement To: Joint Replacement Subject: What am I too young for?Date: Tue, 23 May 2006 18:44:15 -0000Hi all - I have posted a time or two, but have not had surgery at this point. I have a pretty bad right knee, extruded and torn menisci, bone on bone in the inner part of the knee, spurs and bone contusions, etc., but my OS wanted to manage it 'conservatively', saying I was too young for a total knee (I just turned 50). So we tried Supartz injections, which did nothing, and now I have a Varus unloader brace, which causes me so much pain I can't wear the darned thing. They said they can't do a partial knee replacement because my patella isn't in good enough shape. There is a possibility of a double tibial osteotomy, which would leave me totally non weight bearing for at least eight weeks. Crutches are a problem...I had a severely broken wrist last year and still can't put a lot of pressure on my wrist!Anyway, I do understand why they think I am too young for a TKR, because of the number of times it would have to be repeated and bone loss each time, etc., but...aren't I also too young to be CRIPPLED from the pain in my knee!??What would you guys do?deb g

I was bone on bone, etc. Finally found a Dr. who said go for it and it's sooo much better. I've had both of them done, the second in Feb so it's still a bit weird. Guest guest
I haven't posted in a while (busy with school and grandbaby), but I read this and had to respond. I am 48 (as of March) and had my TKR in August 2005 at 47. I'm well aware I may have to have it done another time before I croak, but now I'm living with relatively no pain. It has been worth it and I'll do it again if need be. If your OS refuses to do it then check about finding another. No one should live in pain if they can help it.
