Guest guest
I don't know what term I would give them without being ignorant. I had a new worker who had to go to the office having an asthma attack years ago. The owner told me I was scaring them but in fact they didn't want me to leave because I was helpful and they were afraid for me to leave . The owner just wanted me to get back to work cas he was loosing money. I stayed with the worker until they could leave. I had an inhaler and they were controlled until they could get to the doctor or hospital. The worker confided in me the boss made it a lot worse . Had it been necessary I would have called an ambulance. My boss at the time was a total friggin idiot. Years ago my brother thought I was a hyperchondriac because I went to the dr. alot. He never saw me in a life or death situation, back then I wasn't able to distinguish good breathing from bad. I am lucky now because the people I am around now have compassion and would get me help when I needed it. Sharon ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
How about " breathers " ? I have severe persitent adult onset asthma. I am now totally disabled and waiting admission to National Jewish in hopes of getting some measure of my life back. Meanwhile, I am on absolutely everything and giving myself epi shots. And I am also the one that thought my sister was overacting for attention when she had attacks. Oh, the irony. There is no way to explain to people who can breathe what it feels like not to. > > I think we need a word for the friends and coworkers (teachers, too, > for those of us who were/are children with asthma) who think our > allergies and asthma are all in our heads. Guest guest
" Ignorant " comes to mind. Not clever, but accurate. But you're right, I'm sure we can come up with something specific (and clever). Guest guest
I have been fortunate enough to have friends who have not told me my asthma was all in my head. All they do is listen to me cough! But my sister who had asthma from the time she was 2 months old had teachers who told my mother that they thought her asthma attacks were all in her head. They should have been at our house the nights that she kept me and my mother both awake all night wondering if she would be able to keep breathing. I don't think she ever had any friends who made fun of her. Oh--I also remember that at one point one of her doctors told Mother that he thought some of my sister's problems were psychosymatic (spelling?). That really made my Mom mad! There were teachers I taught with who at one time did not believe asthma was a condition to be taken seriously. However, the school I taught in (where my daughter still teaches) has a nurse who knows the seriousness of asthma. Last year the faculty was taught how to use an epi-pen and had to practice to show the nurse they could use one if necessary. When I got mine, my daughter showed me she knew how to administer it if needed. We do still have to deal with the ignorance of the general public, though. Would it be out of line to suggest " buttheads " for those who think our illness is mostly in our heads? Not very original, but it is still very descriptive of these people. Needs to be specific to our situation - " doubting es " not good enough. I don't have any ideas, but I want to add it to the glossary with " evil candy, " " lightweights, " etc. Any suggestions? Guest guest
Addy: I like this one--very clever and certainly more original than the one I came up with. Guest guest
I just read what I wrote here and it doen's make sense. It should say : " Asthnostic: (n) a person (or persons) who don't believe that Asthma exists. " I either posted that when I was tired or being distracted by my kids who wouldn't go to bed last night. --- K K <grneyyedlady@...> wrote: > Hey Addy... > > > Asthnostic: (n) a person (or persons) who don't > believe that Asthma doesn't exist. > > > How's that!?
