Guest guest
I've been on Xolair for almost 10 weeks (as of June 1) w/300 mgs every two weeks. That means I've had 4 series of shots or 8 shots altogether. Gradually I've noticed weight gain even though I'm not on oral or injected steroid, stomach bloating, and mildly increased pain in joints and throughout my body (I already had arthritis and fibromyalgia). Unfortunately, I haven't noticed any benefit though. Asthma and allergies are the same. I've looked around both on these message boards as well as the net and have seen other people complaining about weight gain or difficulty losing but assumed it was due to evil candy. Nonetheless one of the side efx I've seen for xolair is weight gain and arthralgia. How many others are having this without evil candy? Why does this happen? Really, I would think that weight would drop off as one feels better (don't feel better yet) and was hoping that there might be some positive effect on arthritis although I know it isn't made for that. --------------------------------- Get the free toolbar and rest assured with the added security of spyware protection. Guest guest
Well I am one of the ones complaining about weight gain. I gained about 25 pounds almost immediately after starting the shots. I am not on prednisone and wasn't before I started Xolair. I can't seem to get rid of it. I saw my GP last week and, as I knew he would, he said I wasn't eating right or not getting enough excercise. Despite that fact that I AM dieting and I AM working out about 90 minutes a day. He says I am not eating the right combination of foods for weight loss and recommended the South Beach Diet. He says it is a great diet plan. I don't know how I can follow any diet plan from a book when I work two jobs and am never home for a meal except breakfast. On my own I was bringing tuna and and a few other things for lunch and then eating a grilled chicken salad at dinner. As far as my body hurting I also have been dealing with that but I started taking Replenex from a company called Melaleuca and started seeing a big difference. It is the only joint supplement that I ever noticed a difference when I started taking it. http://www.melaleuca.com/ps/index.cfm?f=ps.productDetail & pid=1691 & sCatId=45 I have an appt with my pulmo dr. next month and I will talk to him about it too. I hope you see some results from Xolair soon. If you have read many of the posts you will see that it could take up to a year to see major results from the shots. Guest guest
Jeannie - I know a lot of folks who've tried the south beach diet and they have all had a lot of success in the beginning, but like a lot of things if they don't keep a moderate diet and moderate exercise regimen, the weight can come back. Good luck. It would really frustrate me to experience that kind of weight gain. Let us know what your pulmo says. Guest guest
I am curious, why the south beach diet as opposed to the mediterrean diet, weight watchers, LA weigh loss, Craig, Nutrisystem? I have put weight on, I walk, swim, etc. Dr's say muscle weighs more than fat. All I see is fat. pyle456 <coachmac@...> wrote: Jeannie - I know a lot of folks who've tried the south beach diet and they have all had a lot of success in the beginning, but like a lot of things if they don't keep a moderate diet and moderate exercise regimen, the weight can come back. Guest guest
Well from what I understand...Nutrisystem you have to buy the meals. It doesn't really teach you from day 1 how to prepare healthy meals for yourself. Weight Watchers you have to count calories, portions, etc., I am not familiar with the Mediterrean diet. On the SB Diet there are the correct amounts of protien, carbs and fat. You don't count or measure anything. The first two weeks are the most restrictive with no carbs, sugar or fruits. After two weeks you start incorporating them back in. You can still eat things you can't on other diets. From what I have read most other diets are too restrictive so most people can't stay on them for any real length of time. With the SB diet it is something you can stay on and not feel like you are depriving yourself of things. I read the book this weekend and it all sounds pretty reasonable. The author is a Cardiologist and developed the diet for his own patients after finding they couldn't stay on other diets or would gain weight instead of losing. Anyway..I won't bore you with all the details but it sounds like sound thinking. I am going to try it and see what happens. The only problem for me is since I am rarely home it will be hard to prepare the meals. --- B G <meencantador@...> wrote: > I am curious, why the south beach diet as opposed to > the mediterrean diet, weight watchers, LA weigh > loss, Craig, Nutrisystem? > > I have put weight on, I walk, swim, etc. Dr's say > muscle weighs more than fat. Guest guest
Ten weeks of Xolair is really not very long. But you have to do your own risk/benefit analysis. Your posts continue to sound like you are dissatisfied with Xolair and you want to stop taking it. If that is the case, than you need to talk to your doctor about no longer trying Xolair. I think you are cheating yourself if you don't give it at least six months, quite frankly. But it's up to you. Please talk to your doctor and let us know what you decide. Guest guest
My boss goes on and off the south beach diet and he is rarely home. Fortunately, we work downtown and we have any number of places you can get salads from. So in the first couple of phases he normally eats Greek or Caesar with grilled chicken or a chef salad from somewhere. If he has to work so late that he can't go home for dinner, he'll order a steak or salmon from somewhere with whatever the veggie is for the day and a side salad instead of potato or rice. He drinks club soda with lime so he's not tempted by sugary drinks (we live in the south - it's terrible). Normally he sheds 9- 12 pounds in the first two weeks. His problem is staying in the healthy habit arena for more than three months, which is why he goes on and off it. Guest guest
I work downtown too and there are plenty of restaurants around but that can get expensive everyday. I have never been a sweet tea or cola drinker so I don't have a problem there. I usually drink water. The book does say you can lose quite a bit the first two weeks. I am starting today so wish me luck!! lol.. Guest guest
Oh my gosh! I too have put on 30 pounds in the 11 months since i started being on xolair and have terrible joint pain which I have NEVER had. I have been ignoring it since my asthma is so good but I have been seriously thinking of going off Xolair due to this fatigue. I am seeing a chiropractor but my knees hurt, my back, my neck, my ankles... I feel like an old lady. I will talk to my pulmo about this, thankyou for all your feedback. > > I've been on Xolair for almost 10 weeks (as of June 1) w/300 mgs every two weeks. Guest guest
My husband and I have been on the South Beach and the first two weeks are the very hardest--especially breakfast as we like a piece of toast with our eggs. The other hard part of any diet is the snacky urge! SB suggestions for snacks are really quite good and healthy--but I found the best between the meal snack was the turkey or Canadian bacon roll-up with a piece of 2% cheese inside. The limit on the nuts doesn't do much--only made me want a few more! The afternoon fat free, sugar free ice cream bar from Blue Bunny is great. The other hard part of the first two weeks is going without the fruit as we both love fruit. Other than that, the diet is really very healthy. I have learned to use a lot of olive oil--always knew it was good for you--and I have used canola oil for cooking for years. We eat whole wheat bread, try to avoid white rice or pasta, or eat it on rare occasions. It is hard to make massive changes in ones diet all at once, but sometimes it is necessary. pyle456 <coachmac@...> wrote: My boss goes on and off the south beach diet and he is rarely home. Guest guest
Seems like most of the current fad diets are retreads or variations on the old Atkins diet, which works quite well and has recently been vindicated by studies at Duke and other research locations after years of vilification by the cardiologists and nutritionists. In fact, my primary care doc says the only reason I'm not diabetic is because I've been following Atkins and avoiding carbs for years - and it's so easy - eat all you want of anything but high carb foods without much fiber. I Am curious and will seek out info on this diet thanks and good luck Gail s <gaildaniels@...> wrote: Well from what I understand...Nutrisystem you have to buy the meals.
