Guest guest
Ohmygoodness! SuzFisher, I hope this is NOT happening to you but just in case .... possibly this is something your doc could check too. Weird how we're having these similar symptoms at same time. Bizarro ... had lumbar spine MRI Fri. aftn. It was a really up-to-date Tensilon 3 machine. The tech (?) gave me copies of the films at my request. Reading the cover - it says " Index for Radiological Diagnoses and Illustration On Back. " It LOOKS like the label says DXTX (diagnosis - treatment?) is 21. On the back, under both " Skull and Contents " and " Spine and Contents " - .2 Inflammation - .21 Osteomyelitis. Sounds to me like I have osteomyelitis ????? No WONDER I'm having this apparent worsening of " arthritis. " Pain in my neck, lower back, under my left arm (torso) hips, left pelvic bone just below waist, and knees and ankles. No one is taking me very seriously. I've had frequent infections for YEARS but assumed they were all in sinuses and lungs. By the way, I seem to be better re asthma. Skipped Advair for 2 days and didn't think it was my last breath. Possibly Xolair is starting to kick in a little bit. This could be a good thing if other systems (of my body) are appropriately monitored and treated. Hope Xolair doesn't have anything to do w-it; suspect this has happened before (before Xolair) but not recognized. Temp is normal but don't feel good. This is Sat. night. I'm trying to figure out what to do. BTW, the only oral steroid I've had in the last 10 months or more was a 4 day course back in Feb. So, I KNOW my " arthritis " isn't caused by unveiling a disease previously covered by steroid. I had to push my pcp to run it - he didn't want to. The neurologist refused to run the MRI - said nothing wrong there!!! The only other odd thing recently was a pap test that showed very high inflammation but no infection or anything else. Slightly concerned and surprised by all this ! --------------------------------- Looking for a deal? Find great prices on flights and hotels with FareChase. Guest guest
I seriously doubt that what you saw on your MRI cover was the radiologist's diagnoses. Most likely, the doc who ordered the MRI gave inflammation and osteomyelitis as diagnoses he wanted to rule out, i.e. what he wanted the radiologist to look for as possible diagnoses to explain your symptoms. It would be highly unusual for the cover to show the radiologist's diagnoses. These should be given only in the resport sent to the ordering physician, which is who you should contact for the MRI results. Also, osteomyelitis is almost always an extremely localized infection, e.g. in a single point on a single bone rather than generalized over many bones. Inflammation, as in arthritis, can occur in many places throughout the body or just one spot. Best of luck to you in trying to figure out where your symptoms are coming from. Guest guest
This is just my own experience. I had joint/bone aches the first few months on xolair, but this last shot (#11) I had no aches anywhere--and the fatigue was very mild--so mild it really didn't bother me, though I was conscious of being a little tired. But that too passed quickly, although I did sleep a little longer the night after my shot. I should mention that I take one shot a month--150mg. I can't remember the amount Suzi (?) is taking, but I'm wondering if the higher doses might produce stronger side effects????Not a doctor, nor even anything close to the medical profession.......Just a question..... I agree that the doctor should be consulted--and the situation discussed thoroughly with all of the options/side effects covered thoroughly. Prayers for wisdom for you and your doctor in your treatments. Adah tiredofsteroids <sitesee@...> wrote: I seriously doubt that what you saw on your MRI cover was the radiologist's diagnoses. Guest guest
I'm not a radiologist, but my husband is an aging athlete and he has had any number of x-rays. I agree with Fran that normally the cover indicates what's to be ruled out so that the radiologist knows what direction the doc who ordered the x-rays is thinking. My husband's cases are more straight forward tho - usually multiple views of the same broken bone(s) so they can decide what kind of contraption to put them back together with.... Guest guest
I am curious, I have began to experience hip pain. I have been reading many readers saying their pain is because of XOLAIR which I have been taking a little over a year now. I most recently noticed the pain when participating in a softball game with my 18 year old son. I found that I could barely run because my hip became painful and a little cumbersome to put pressure on when running. Could this be caused by XOLAIR? I also believe I read recently that prednisone and Nexium (the purple pill) could also cause the bones I our bodies to deteroriate and/or weakening and pain in bones and joints. What has anyone else heard about this? Guest guest
Frequent or regular oral steroid use is a risk factor for bone loss (as well as diabetes, cataracts and a slough of nasty things). I don't know about nexium. Addy Group co-owner Too afraid to go back for a second dexa scan 'cuz the first one was bad enough. Guest guest
I am an example of what pred can do to bones. I'm osteopenic with hip pain. It started BEFORE the xolair. I have also had surgery because about an inch of radial bone in my arm dissolved. the surgeon was more than a little surprised when he touched it during surgery and it continued to crumble. my last bouts of pred and INHALED steroids have caused one of my teeth to crumble as well. My dentist told me my teeth were very soft because the calcium had been leeched from them.Thank you steroids. What I'm trying to say is that all steroids can cause bone/joint damage to some degree. My drs put me on xolair so I would quit dissolving! I don't think you can blame xolair for the damage. Most asthmatics have long, involved steroid histories; not all of the side effects show up right away. I also had aspergillis osteomylitis caused by IV steroids. It is very rare and not an easy diagnosis. I'm 2 " shorter(4'9 " ), but after 6 mos of IV meds, have almost full mobility. It is a trade off everyone must decide: which is worse- the disease or the cure. becki > > > > Ohmygoodness! Guest guest
Maybe I am missing something here, but then I am not medically trained, and had a rough time with chemistry (not biology, however.) I was on high doses of prednisone (the highest was 60 mg for two days, tapering off from there) off and on for over five years. The very first time my allergist put me on prednisone for asthma, he instructed me to do two things. 1. Start taking calcium every day; 2. go to my pcp for complete bloodwork every six months to make sure that the levels of calcium, potassium, etc. were not declining. He also told me to drink ginger ale when I was on prednisone as it helped the body to retain potassium. (I still can't figure that one out, but I enjoyed the ginger ale, anyway and diet ginger ale was available.) When I had my first and only bone scan for osteoporosis (last summer), my doctor doubled the calcium I was taking, but told me the scan only showed I could be a candidate for osteoporosis. The up side to having taken calcium for so long is that the dentist told me the bones in my jaws were like those of a 14 year old. (I'm not sure he knew what he was talking about, but it sounded good to me!) By the way, I was never allergic to dairy products and drank lots of milk until I was in my late 40's. Now I use it on my cereal and that is about all. But I take 1200 mg of calcium each day. And I do try to eat foods rich in calcium. That's my experience anyway. Doctor's know best and it is always best to discuss the issues thoroughly with your doctor(s). To the many of you who have had serious bone problems as a result of prednisone, my sympathy goes out to you. I realize how very good I have had it in so many ways, and I am very glad for xolair. No pred for over a year now! Adah asperqu <asperqu@...> wrote: I am an example of what pred can do to bones. I'm osteopenic with hip pain. It started BEFORE the xolair. Guest guest
I looked up Nexium and it is rare, but it does effect the bones in some people. It might help for you to look it up on Internet and read the possible side effects and the contraindications. I do take Nexium and zantac at bedtime for gerd. asperqu <asperqu@...> wrote: I am an example of what pred can do to bones. I'm osteopenic with hip pain. It started BEFORE the xolair. Guest guest
I can't remember anyone else mentioning calcium. I can't imagine having to go through what you have gone through in your life, but I imagine that you love life and are more appreciative of life than some of us who have stuggled but not like you have! God's blessings be on you. I know Doug and several others have suffered bone loss and diseases from too much prednisone. I am humbled by the pain and suffering many of you have gone through. I thought my 60 mg was a lot and it did cause me some pain in my arms and hands. I did have several cortisone shots to get it into my system quickly, but I never had to stay in the hospital, although I did make some ER visits in the early days when asthma reared it's ugly head in my life. My nebulizer at home kept me out of the hospital, many times, though. I am very glad that the xolair is helping you. Adah asperqu <asperqu@...> wrote: > > > > > > Ohmygoodness! Guest guest
Anybody on frequent or chronic steroids should have periodic bone scans to check for osteoporosis. Adah, I think you said you had a bone scan with a worrisome result. It's important that you have a follow-up scan after a year to see where you stand. Treatment for osteoporosis or osteopenia (thinning bones that are not yet osteoporotic) should include daily 1200-1500 mg calcium with vitamin D as well as Fosamax or Boniva. The latter meds slow down and can even reverse bone loss. I developed osteoporosis in my 30s after only 3months of 40mg daily prednisone. It definitely can happen even with just inhaled steroids, although a lot of docs don't seem to realize that. If you're taking high-dose inhaled steroids, enough can be absorbed systemically to cause any or all of the common side effects of prednisone. For example, for 6 years I was on baseline doses of Advair 500/50 twice daily plus Flovent 220, 2 puffs twice daily. The amount of fluticasone (the steroid in both Advair and Flovent) absorbed by the body (not just the lungs) at that dosing is equivalent to 25 mg prednisone daily. I'm extremely steroid-sensitive and that was enough to worsen my osteoporosis, cause a 40-pound weight gain, worsen my high blood pressure, cause suppression of my adrenal glands and produce the bruising and susceptibility to skin tears that oral and IV steroids can produce. In children, inhaled steroids alone can cause suppression of growth. I don't say all this to frighten anyone, since there's no question that steroids are life-savers for many of us, but it's important to be aware that even inhaled steroids can cause serious side effects. A big one that should be checked for because it is treatable is osteoporosis - please, please get your bone scans! Fran So...bottom line is please get your bone scans! > > > > > > > > Ohmygoodness! Guest guest
My doctor never prescribed a bone density test until a year ago. It didn't show that I had any problems right now, but merely that I could if I didn't do something right now, which is when he prescribed the extra calcium--I did ask him what I should do about it. So far my pcp has not prescribed boniva or any other supplement. He is very good at watching out for my overall health and I feel certain that if he thought I needed the extra calcium he would have prescribed it for me. Another very important fact that jumped out again is that EVERY ONE OF US HAS AN INDIVIDUAL CHEMICAL MAKEUP AND RESPOND TO ALL MEDICATIONS AND STIMULI SUCH AS ALLERGENS IN VARIOUS WAYS. (Our DNA?) I did have some bruising while on prednisone, but made sure I took vitamin C (I think I read that somewhere) and it seemed to help some. I take Advair 500 and Spiriva (which I understand has some steroid in it--I didn't think it did...) But other than the Advair, I don't even use a steroid nasal spray anymore. I do know that after a while, even inhaled steroids can filter into the system. You are right, though, in insisting on checking on our bones. I just am a believer in checking with my doctors about every thing. Not only did I have the bone scan, but I had an MRI on my spine because of pain I was having in my legs at night. Nothing. In reading of all you and the others have gone through, I am sitting here very grateful that while I have had great difficulty breathing, working with my allergist, my asthma, for the most part has been rather under control for about the last ten years, with bouts about two or three times a year which required prednisone. But even those bouts have not showed up in the year that I have been on xolair. So maybe someday soon I can stop the ADVAIR. Fran, I really respect your knowledge, advice and feel for you in what you have had to go through. I know that you will always straighten us out when we don't have some of our facts straight, and you always do it in a very kind, gentle way. I, for one, appreciate you and the fact that you are a very important part of this group. You are also a great encourager! Guest guest
They were from the heart. And you are right about exercise. I don't do it regularly enough, but I do housework--bending over putting the dishes in the dishwasher, bending and moving putting clothes in the washer and then transfering them to the dryer, lots of arm movement folding sheets, towels, etc.; when I have to shop, I walk the perimeter of the store (we have very large supermarkets as well as large Walmarts), sometimes I not only walk the perimeter, but I'll walk up and down every aisle--stretching to reach cans on the top, bending to get the cereal from the bottom shelf. And up until this last semester I kept my granddaughter from the time she was born--two or three days a week, depending on when her Mother had college classes, so I also did some weight training--lifting her--still do sometimes, and running after her from the time she learned to crawl--fun, but exercise! So I haven't been sitting on my duff. But I really do feel better when I go to the gym and walk at a consistent speed for 30 minutes! And my pcp really encourages me to do that, too. tiredofsteroids <sitesee@...> wrote: Adah, thank you so much for you kind remarks! Fran > > > > > > > > > > Ohmygoodness! Guest guest
Hi Adah: I can't find the name of the original person who sent the e-mail about bone infection. Bone lose was mentioned, there are products on the market to stop the bone lose one of them is Actonel. Kathy Adah Voigt <asthmatic50@...> wrote: I can't remember anyone else mentioning calcium.
