prednisone's effects on blood counts

For the sake of clarity, I thought I would comment on

the issue. (I am a nurse in a neurosurgery floor with

many patients on all forms of the evil candy).

Prednisone at higher than physiological doses will

case white blood counts to rise because it causes

neutrophils (a subset of WBCs) to leave the tissue and

enter the blood (called neutrophilia). Thus, many

patients on pred/decadron/evil candy have higher than

normal white counts. However, noting the high

neutrophils, you can often conclude it is a medication

effect.

I see no reason for xolair to effect any blood test

other the free IgE but I will not go into that

discussion again as it has been exhausted.

On another notes, I just got out of a 2 day admission

for an asthma exacerbation. I have been on xolair for

2 + years. My pulmo was actually congratulating me on

how far I've come. This was a minor set back. Last

admission was 5 months ago. Asthma is a chronic,

life-long disease. Xolair is not a cure. It is time

for people to realize it will not necessarily set them

free from all their symptoms, meds and doctor visits.

No medication can do that. I think once everyone comes

to terms with that, they will feel better about their

choice. If you don't like how it makes you feel, by

all means stop taking it.
