I thought I was being paranoid when I thought I could feel a hump returning on Ian and it turned out that I was right. If you are really worried, you could ask to get an x-ray taken. Is he getting the brace in Boston or Erie?

Noelle (12-2-01)Ian (8-15-04)

paranoid?

I am making myself crazy looking at Jake's back several times a day as he is unsupported and will be so until June 5 when we pick up his brace. It's now day 10 out of cast and today is the first day I can feel a slight (very slight) hump next to his second curve, and this is the curve that measured 6 degrees this past Wednesday. Do you think this is possible or am I getting paranoid? He was outdoors for much of the day today running, jumping, throwing balls, blowing bubbles, etc. Do you think it was too much?

We are headed back to Erie for his brace June 5! Can you believe they can have a brace ready within a week?!? That's great they can get it done so fast. I am sure they will address any of your concerns about the hump returning when you go back on the 5th. I will keep my fingers crossed that all goes well!

Don't worry. If your whole arm becomes bright red and

hot up to the elbow, you have a problem. Unless you

become septic (dropping your bp because the infection

is in your bloodstream), you will be fine. Of course,

if the thing is not healing and is all full of pus, do

get is checked.

Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. Go to

LOL,

You don't have to beat around the bush. What are you trying to say, I

shouldn't worry unless I get a lung infection! (what does gangrene

look like?)

My brother got strep thumb once. His thumb got a huge blister on it

that got all pussy and infected and the doc drained it and did a

culture and it turned out to be strep. He was five or six at the

time. We thought it was pretty cool, but it was probably just plain

gross.

Ron, I've gotten a couple of skin infections after gardening (pre-

Xolair!), and not had any trouble with my lungs, but both times I had

to go on pred and take antibiotics.

Good luck. Hopefully you won't lose a limb or anything.

You don't have to worry that you are at increased risk about

infection spreading specifically to you lungs. If " it's swollen and

painful " means just the very small area immediately around the

splinter/bite is swollen and painful, you may be OK just soaking it

in warm water and using and over-the-counter antibiotic ointment

right at the site. However, if instead you mean a larger area,

especially much of the thumb, then you do need a prescription oral

antibiotic and removal of the splinter, if there is one, ASAP. If at

any time you see any red streaks, even small ones, leading away from

the site, that is an emergency and you need to go to urgent care or

an ER right away.

You are correct to worry more than you would if you were not

immunosuppressed by prednisone, just not specifically about a lung

infection. Steroids reduce the signs of infection by reducing

inflammation and fever, so it is possible to have a more significant

infection than is apparent visually.

I am a microbiology lab tech in the Army. I see a lot of soldiers with

bacterial infections in wounds. GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!!. Ask if they can culture

it. Staph is the most common bacteria found in wounds. Ask the doctor about

MRSA and treating for it. MRSA is Mythel. Resistance Staph Aureus (excuse by

spelling, our computer spell it right for us) It is a strain of Staph-bacterica

that is resistance to some antibotics. Don't worry, there are other drugs out

there to treat it.

If you are going to an Urgent care clinic maybe wearly a mask will help you

with your concern with getting other people germs.

Please let a doctor treat you I don't want you to get worse.

I have been on Xolair for two years but still take 20 mg of Evil Candy daily,

plus 10 other

drugs. My immune system is severely depressed, Evil Candy and the rest of the

drugs, Xolair

keeps me going. My fear is that if I get an infection, does the infection have a

propensity to

travel to the lungs for those of us with asthma, depressed immune system due to

Meds, etc.?

I know my Pulmo advised me that I would catch " air borne " stuff really really

easy. I never

much thought about it until my wife said " you are going to Urgent Care, you can

not afford

to get any kind of infection " .

Has anyone had any experience with this or am I just being paranoid as it is not

lung related.

I went to Urgent Care, the official diagnosis by the Physician's

Assistant was, " Oh Yuk! " . LOL.

It did swell more, they gave me antibiotics and they already seem to

be working, I have a follow up with my regular Dr. They said it was

not staph. Prednisone has reeked such havoc on me that I forgot about

the depressed immune system thing for things other then asthma.

I do appreciate everyone's concern, that's why I love this site!

Ron - so glad you are not going to lose your arm or anything dire

like that. And you're right - pred makes one prone to infection.

My wife said I better not lose my opposable thumb, and then gave me a

banana, what's that all about, LOL

I'm doing much better, swelling is down, did I tell you I do not like

Prednisone? I see my pulmo in a week, was hoping to lower Pred but

between the " burning of the fall leaves " and the goldenrod/ragweed, I

think I'm stuck for awhile

Ron, I'm also SO glad you got your thumb taken care of and that

you're doing better. Unless they cultured it, there is no way they

can tell whether or not it is a staph infection. As a previous poster

mentioned, by far the most common bacteria in skin infections are

staph and strep. I hope it clears up completely soon.
