Another side effect of Pred

My 82 year old mother in law took her final 10 mg of Pred on the 28th.

I took her to another doctor for something else that day.

While we were waiting for him to come into the exam room, she looked

up at a blank white wall and said: " I wonder when that worm will make

it across the wall? " - There was nothing there. Also, she said:

" Look at that nice pattern of squares and lines the doctor has on his

counter top. " - The counter top was a plain white.

That doctor she was having Steroid Psychosis and said it would wear off

in a few days. Talk about scaring my wife and I to death!!! In all my

years of taking Pred, I had never heard dof Steroid Psychosis.

As I mentioned before, the ER doctor that prescribed the steroids for

her gave her a lot. A decadron shot plus a 60 mg taper of Pred.

For a 95 pound little granny woman, that seemed a little much to me.

Thank GOD she is off the stuff and now on the mend.

Doug, I am sorry I did not mention it when you said

your MIL was off the first time. Very common. It will

wear off......Some ppl lose their minds completely,

become raving and incoherent and need potent anti

psychotics. Its SUPER fun for all parties

involved.....

who is going for xolair this AM while on 30 mg of pred

and being sob again. Why Why Why??

Hi Doug,

That is a criminal amount of pred considering maximum dosage is 1mg for

every kilo of body weight, so at 95pounds is 43kilos thats 17mg too much

especially for an elderly person to deal with.

Actually, it's acceptable and sometimes necessary to prescribe as

much as 2 mg/kg/24h for a severe allergic reaction (which it sounds

like she had) or severe asthma axacerbation, so the 60 mg daily was

not out of range. However, the elderly often need lower dosing

because they metabolize drugs differently than younger folks. I would

have thought with that whopping dose of Decadron, the dose of pred

could have been lower. But as we say in medicine, it's not always

fair to look back in time through the " retroscope " and say what

should have been done. That's always much easier than being on the

front lines and having to make a decision on the spot in an

emergency. But Doug, now you know if there's a next time, which I

hope there never is!.
