When I started my X shots last week, I was instructed to wait 1 hour and to

pick up my epi-pen on the way out of the clinic. There is a pharmacy there.

My doctor said I have to show my epi-pen before my next X shot, and have to

wait 30 minutes in the clinic. I am to carry my epi-pen with me for 24

hours after my shot. The nurse explained that every doctor's office has

their own policy for X. I'm surprised that it varies so much from office to

office. I'm excited to get my second set of shots on Wednesday. I can't

wait until I can see a real change.

Subject: [ ] I stand corrected...

A few days ago, made this statement in one of my posts:

<<If reactions are a serious concern then, why aren't we required to

have epi pens and wait 2 hours after a regular allergy or penecillin

shot? These have caused FAR more reactions than xolair in the past 4

years since xolair came out on the market.>>

I asked my Xolair nurse today why we were not required to bring our

Epi-pens when we get our regular allergy shots. She replied: " Didn't

they tell you yet? Dr._______ requires a 30 minute wait instead of

20 and is also requiring evereone to bring their twin jet or epi pen and

keep it with them the rest of the day. "

Well, I stand corrected! :))

My doctor is new to our practice and is a little more cautious than

other allergists I have had. I like that!!!

Hmmmmm, in his office, Xolair and allergy shots have the same rules,

wait and instructions. Interesting!

Kristy,

Yes, doctors surely are different with their policies about Xolair.

Some don't make you wait at all. In fact, you don't even have to come

to their office because you are allowed to self inject at home....

WITH an epi pen close by of course :)

I would LOVE to do this. It would save me time, gas money and

insurance co-pays but every time I ask my doctor, he gives me a look

of horror. One nurse about fainted LOL

I can only wish! Sigh!

Kristy - good luck, hang in there; glad you tolerated the first set

of Xolair shots well! Hope we'll be hearing good news from you by

Xmas!

The reason for the difference in recommended waiting time between the

two is that serious reactions to allergy shots virtually always

happen withing 30 minutes of the injection, whereas the majority of

anaphylactic reactions that have occurred with Xolair happened in the

window between 45 minutes to 2 hours after the injection, hence the

FDA recommendation of a 2-hour wait after Xolair injections.

Realistically, a 30-minute wait doesn't really do much to protect you

after Xolair.
