Guest guest
Goodness, I didn't realize that about penicillin compared to Xolair although I AM allergic to pencicillin. I never responded well to allergy desensitization shots either - chronic reactions including several in which I was given epinephrine and other stuff on emergency basis. Xolair is COMPLETELY different and totally unrelated to traditional " allergy shots " . As allergic and drug sensitive as I am you would think I would be the one to have the anphylaxsis but nothing like that for me. Gotta go to the fridge now and pull out my Xolair & start mixing the three injections - I still do it at home w/epipen available. Don't worry too much since you're in doc's office they'll know what to look for and do. Besides, it's very rare to have any kind of significant reaction to Xolair. Let us know how it all works out for you. Heads up! > Actually the rate of anaphylaxis to xolair is the SAME as the rate of anaphylactic reactions to penicillin. I looked up the data (Fran correct me if you have newer stats). I don't have the exact numbers with me but I can post them if you like. Granted, there are more ppl allergic to penicillin than any other allergen including food allergies. Most of us do not worry when given an antibiotic by their doctor especially if we have had it before. I would think the same level of concern could apply to xolair when previous doses have been well tolerated. > I am getting my first shot next week. The potential for anaphylaxis is > very scary. Guest guest
I'm allegic to penicillin and the last time I had any, about 40 years ago, I broke out in hives big time and the doctor told me to never take it again or I would probably go into anphylactic shock. But I've had no reaction to Xolair ... coming up on one year taking the max dose every two weeks. Just to be safe, though, I carry an Epi-pen with me when going to get my shots and otherwise have one close at hand. Good idea anyway, when certain bee stings could get me in big trouble. > > > Actually the rate of anaphylaxis to xolair is the SAME as the rate of > anaphylactic reactions to penicillin.
