Risk of anaphylaxis in perspective

Hi,

I am on vacation but I had to chime in. There seems to be a lot of people

concerned about the risk of anaphylaxis with xolair. Actually the rate of

anaphylaxis to xolair is the SAME as the rate of anaphylactic reactions to

penicillin. I looked up the data (Fran correct me if you have newer stats). I

don't have the exact numbers with me but I can post them if you like. Granted,

there are more ppl allergic to penicillin than any other allergen including food

allergies. Most of us do not worry when given an antibiotic by their doctor

especially if we have had it before. I would think the same level of concern

could apply to xolair when previous doses have been well tolerated.

Why is the FDA asking people to carry epipens, monitor for side effects with

vigor? I think the FDA has a new attitude of " safety first " given recent issues

with vioxx, avandia etc....and this is a primary motivator.

Here is some food for thought. Prednisone has caused many of us to have serious

side effects. Doug for example, has cataracts. I developed massive hypertension.

We need those drugs and accept that side effect profile as being unavoidable.

And we do not hold the pred manufacturers accountable for them and for " making

our life miserable " . Why?? I dont think xolair should be all that different if

we willingly accept to take the medication.

Just food for though!!!

Subject: [ ] New to xolair

I am getting my first shot next week. The potential for anaphylaxis is

very scary. Does this tend to happen with people that had that kind of

reaction to regular allergy shots or other allergens?

This has been a very well covered and exhaustive discussion on our board for

several months now and just a few days ago, we decided to stop posting about the

subject. My co/owner will be posting a FAQ file about the subject in a few days

for everyone to read.

In the mean time, I highly suggest that you read the MANY previous posts about

the subject and most especially TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR if you are having any doubts

whatsoever.

Thank you so much and once again, thanks for joining us. You are among friends
