Guest guest
Is it possible you're being exposed to another contaminant in the medical building other than latex that you're reacting to? I've been working in a physicians office for several years now and at our building, the surrounding hospital and many other health care settings around here latex use has been banned. I would hope most other places have banned it's use too. Karin Melvin <nnmfam@...> wrote: I am allergic to latex xolair contains none but I have to go into a medical buildign to get it. Guest guest
Dear Karin, If your doctor is the one advising you to try again. It is always worth a try. My doctor always says that I would be a good poster person for Xolair. It has been 4years on the medication in February. My doctor wanted me to go on it in November but I was causious because of the money and the authority where I live. But I am very glad I started and my doctor increased my dose from two shots once a month to two shots twice a month. My superior is starting to make comments about my going to the doctor so often. I just smile and say nothing. Breathing well. As Always, Sr. Volz, C.R. Karin Melvin <nnmfam@...> wrote: I am not holding any perosn responsable. Guest guest
Its ok to be nosey. I had a huge argument before they figured out I had a latex allergy with 2 allergists at the group you are referring to. In fact I ended up in Wisconsin to be tested once I was told by a ER Dr that he really thought it was a severe latex allergy. That DR referred me to DR. Ristow at the old Genesee. She had to retire so I am now with DR Arreazza. Guest guest
Suzanne, Here in Rochester it is really 50?50 in fact the hospital I go to for reactions uses latex on the floors and some ors but not the ICU or Er. As for DRs offices some do and some don't as well. I wish they would all go latex free . Meaning no latex at all . Not just gloves. Guest guest
I'm sorry to here that. Here in the Northern Virginia/Greater DC area most of the hospitals/clinics have banished latex in any form. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for my particular allergy trigger - aerosol propellant. Is there anyone on the list with aerosol propellant allergies? Good luck making your decision, Karin. It's not an easy one. The reason latex is still used is that, even though some people react to it, it is still a better barrier against biological contamination than other barrier materials, including vinyl and nitrile. Both of these materials have a high rate of getting holes in them. The best substitute is polypropylene, which is very expensive (in the area of dollars per pair of gloves rather than cents). Considering the millions of gloves used, the cost is crippling for community hospitals that rely on meager federal funding. I've struggled with it, too. I've had to change dentists because they won't quit using latex on me despite the warning in the chart! They just forget! Guest guest
That's to bad. I would have thought those guys would have caught the latex allergy. A bunch of their patients participated in the Xolair trials for the FDA approval. I used to see " Dr. Pollen " ,at AAIR. He is the one who diagnosed me as having Allergic Asthma..after having " regular " asthma since the early 70's. Never had to go to the ER up in Rochester for my asthma. Is Strong the best one to go to?! ( they are the best at everything else, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were!) I didn't have my first ER visit till 1998, it was Christmas and my great Aunt had on some Really strong perfume that I didn't like/didn't like me. After that we moved " downstate and things went down hill quite rapidly. 40 ER visits between 2001 and 2005. Got to know the ER nurses and Dr.'s, at the local hospital on a first name basis. About 15 ended up being hospitalizations, two of those resulted in intubations...and then came Xolair ! I feel like a new person!!!!!!! " Xolair...it DOESN'T give you wings! " LOL!! --- Karin Melvin <nnmfam@...> wrote: > Its ok to be nosey. I had a huge argument before > they figured out I had a latex allergy with 2 > allergists at the group you are referring to. Guest guest
Teh AAir group was given grant money by the glove manufactuers and incentivies not to mention latex allergy . Sad but found to be true. I would not go to strong for much anymore in fact anywhere in Rochester has gotton bad. It is very scarey that you cnnot get safe Er care for asthma here or any other medical condtion yet we have one of teh biggest research hospitals in the country. I wonder what was so different downstate to set your ashtma off tha is is not here. Karin > > > > > I am not holding any perosn responsable. Guest guest
Suzanne, we just left a large pediatric group that has continued to use latex including in bandages here in Northern Virginia/Fairfax County. I complained several times, especially after the time they asked me to hold my son as they took blood and only had latex gloves – I am latex allergic. I carry non-latex gloves with me and demanded she use those instead, though I could feel I was already reacting to the airborne latex from all the glove use in their office lab. B. Guest guest
I have aerosol reactions all the time. The sanitizing sprays, plug in room things, and incense are the worse. I can actually feel my airways clamp shut. My worse reaction was in a doctor & #39;s office. The tech was cleaning the room next door, and used a half a can of Lysol air freshener. I had to use my Epi because my lungs just shut down. The ENT never saw a reaction like that, and the idiot tech & #39;s comment was & quot;you can be allergic to this. It & #39;s impossible. & quot; Whatever moron.... I also have a hard time with folks who marinate themselves in cologne or perfume.
