Guest guest
That was one ignorant and poorly trained RN. Sorry to hear you're having the miseries - feel better soon. Just wondering - do use Astelin as one of your nasal sprays? If not, as your doc to add it to your meds. It's an antihistamine that goes right to the source in nasal allergies. I use it a lot for my chronically itchy nose (and gee, I'm on Xolair - tell THAT to that RN!LOL) and especially for flareups. For me those flareups these days come mainly on rainy days due to mold spores, my biggest nemesis of many big nemeses. > > the RN was an interesting lady today. > She said since I am on Xolair I should not have a flare up. > Tell that to my allergies. Guest guest
My doctor prescribed Nasonex AND Astelin. He told me that they take care of two different problems. He gave them to me when I had a coughing event for about three weeks. My GP had also given me Astelin several years ago when my ears were stopped up after an International flight. It really helped that, too. I try to keep Astelin on hand. tiredofsteroids <sitesee@...> wrote: That was one ignorant and poorly trained RN. Guest guest
Interesting you should mention Astelin. It's among the myriad of nasal sprays I've tried over the last 50 years that didn't really work. The worst, of course, being anything with oxymetazoline in it. That stuff is nasty. I was spraying it probably 10 - 20 times a day until an allergist told me about it and gradually weaned me off it. Talk about evil stuff. Eventually, I found an ENT guy who said my problem was not so much allergies as chronic sinusitis, and we've been treating that ever since. I have a 912 Ege level, hence the Xolair, but the real buggaboo is my sinuses. Alas. Guest guest
Right, Nasonex is a steroid and Astelin is an antihistamine, so they attack nasal allergies from two different directions. - Fran > > > > the RN was an interesting lady today. > > She said since I am on Xolair I should not have a flare up. > > Tell that to my allergies. Guest guest
Thanks, Fran. I think I remember that is what he said. Also, he told me to use them only twice a day. I would think the body (nose in particular) might become immune to the Astelin if it was used too much????? At any rate, I have always been afraid of nose sprays since I had a friend years ago who became addicted to a nasal spray and the doctor had to wean her off of it. That sort of did it for me. I have used an over the counter nasal spray at the instruction of my doctor, but he told me to use it for three or four days and then stop. tiredofsteroids <sitesee@...> wrote: Right, Nasonex is a steroid and Astelin is an antihistamine, so they attack nasal allergies from two different directions. - Fran > > > > the RN was an interesting lady today. > > She said since I am on Xolair I should not have a flare up. > > Tell that to my allergies. Guest guest
Adah - chances are the nasal spray to which you refer was one containing oxymetazoline (Afrin) which is very effective. I discovered its dangers many years ago when I started using it and it worked so well I kept on using it, eventually carrying it with me at all times and spraying maybe every half hour or so to keep my nasal passages open. Back then, I don't know whether or not the container had the warning label about not using the stuff more than about five days, but if it did, I ignored it completely and used it months on end. The result, according to the doc, was an ever-increasing rebound effect that made my condition increasingly worse. I had to be gradually weaned off the stuff. A few weeks ago, I was at Duke Univ. Hosp for a look into my infected sinuses, and just before they shoved the camera thingy up my nose, they sprayed Afrin in - it worked perfectly and kept my passages open for hours, but now I know enough not to use it further. Guest guest
Terry: You are so right--it was Afrin! I think sometimes my brain just shorts out! I was very cautious about using it as my doctor really scared me--especially after having a friend who had been so dependent on nasal spray! Thanks for reminding me. Glad you responded well to it this last time. I have had some drainage and stuffiness but the nasacort and astelin seem to work. Again, I am very cautious, though when using them. I did find that I could use something like Ocean Spray at any time and it seemed to help with stuffiness as well. I have a sample of one of the salt water sinus rinses, but everytime I read the label and instructions I get cold feet. I have had stopped up ears and am a little afraid for that reason. Probably wouldn't hurt me, though. HOpe you get some relief from the sinusitis. Guest guest
Just a little thing, but we have perpetuated the misspelling of allergies in the subject line! Being a retired English teacher, I noticed--but I really thought someone else might catch it. I've smiled everytime I've seen it Wonder if someone has a definition for alleriges? Maybe the wrinkles on the sides and top of the nose caused by the upward stroke of the palm of the hand on the nose when it itches ? Adah Voigt <asthmatic50@...> wrote: Thanks, Fran. Guest guest
Well, I'm currently ending my first week of daily antibiotic infusion of Cefepime thru my jolly pic line for one of my various sinus infections - only five more weeks to go - taking cipro and another oral antibiotic for pseudomonas and one other infection up there. That's why I'm concerned about the 20% of Xolair users who develop upper respiratory infections - seems like I abound with them. If I could get rid of the infections, I'd gladly give up Xolair and deal with the asthma, especially now that I know it's caused by sinus inflamation. It's too bad there is so much uncertainty and confusion about what causes what and what should be treated by what. I've got an infectious disease control doc here who doesn't agree with the ENT doc at Duke who doesn't agree with my primary here. Sheeeesh!! Guest guest
Hi Adah - Not all nasal sprays are alike. The type of nasal spray you can become " addicted " to is decongestant spray like Afrin and Neo- Synephrine. It's not a true addiction like to narcotics. Instead what happens is if you use them longer than about 3 days and then stop when you feel better, you can have rebound nasal congestion due to your nose just having adjusted to having the medication. But - if you need these meds, you need them and they can be extremely helpful in the super-congested and painful days of a sinus infection, especially if you can't take oral decongestants or they're not effective. You just have to know that when you eventually stop this type of spray, you may feel congested again but if you just wait it out, understanding what's happening, the sensation goes away within a day or so. I learned this not in my medical training but from my ENT in the days when I had very frequent, very severe sinus infections that didn't respond to the usual antibiotics. Many docs are simply not aware that there's a way to use these meds safely and effectively, it just takes patient education. And it's not impossible, I suppose, that you might become " immune " to Astelin after using it steadily for a length of time but I've been using it for many years and it's always very effective and, just like Addy said, often immediately. It's really a great med with only rare side effects. Guest guest
Adah, do you know that we call the motion you described the " rabbit sign " in medicine? Because, of course, when you do it you make your nose look like a little bunny's nose. It's one of the clinical clues that the patient may be suffering from allergies. Honest, it's true!!! Guest guest
Hi Terry - I'm so sorry you're having such a tough time. As I've mentioned to you in the past, I spent many years in exactly your position, including many hospitalizations for weeks at a time of IV antibiotics before the days of home IVs. I had so many major sinus surgeries that I now have basically one large cavity back there with all the linings removed(sorry if that's TMI for some of you) That still didn't do it. I finally had a very detailed and thorough immunology work-up by a medical school immunologist who figured out that I had an unusual type of antibody deficiency. I did much better after that because I started receiving monthy IV infusion of antibodies (IVIG). Can't remember for sure whether you've had that extensive an immunology workup but if not, it's well worth it. Hope you feel better soon. Guest guest
P.S. - not sure if I explained it well enough before, but the 20% of Xolair users getting respiratory infections was no different than the percentage of placebo test subjects getting respiratory infections. IMHO, it's not the Xolair. -Fran > > > > > > the RN was an interesting lady today. > > > She said since I am on Xolair I should not have a flare up. > > > Tell that to my allergies. Guest guest
Now that you mention the neosynepherine, I think that is what my friend had overused. It did take her a while to become accustomed to not using it all the time. Thank you for the information. I do know that in the early years when I used the Afrin I got relief almost immediately and I do now with the Astelin. Our group is very fortunate to have you as a member, not only for your medical expertise, but for your experiences as well. I, for one, look forward to the times you share your knowledge with us. Hope you are having really good days--Yesterday was not a terribly good day for me. I found myself using my inhaler a little more than usual. (Of course I have not been using it all some days, so even to use it once would be more than usual). Lots of stuff in the dry air yesterday. But today, aside from an itchy nose, I am feeling good again. I really appreciate the days when I feel super good and get a lot accomplished. Didn't have too many of these days at all before xolair. Have a great week all--should be an exciting Super Bowl game--and I am a Dallas Cowboy fan.....sorry folks.....I would like to see the Giants win, simply because I am usually for the underdog. Guest guest
Hi Fran - yes, a while back you mentioned the similarities of our plights and suggested a test - I don't recall the name, but I mentioned it to my primary care doc and he had it run. I was in the normal range, albeit on the low side, but I may press him to refer me to an immunologist at Duke - I don't think we have any locally, even though we're the medical center for S.E. NC. On the other hand, maybe I'll just buy a few gallons of Hadacol if I can find any. Guest guest
Hi Terry, I think that it would be great for you to get checked out by a Duke immunologist. If you're right there, they can do tests that can't even be sent from a distance. Hope you're feeling better.
