We use unflavored, unadulterated nystatin powder. It is yellow...

[ ] Nystatin

Our doctor ordered Nystatin in a stevia base from Coastal

Compounding. The colour is a horrible looking red. Is Nystatin always

red in colour or does each pharmacy compound it with its own colour?

Those of you using it, dont your children react to the artificial

colour in it? (I thought most of the autistic children reacted badly

to artificial colours/flavours ?)

If so, would taking some No Fenol with it help?

Also, the bottle says that it can be used only till March 2003. Does

it mean that I have to throw it away after that? (they've charged

quite a lot for this!)

Thanks a lot

wow! that is a big bottle to use in such a short time.

I get mine from The Compounding Pharmacist in Wayne, PA 610-688-6883. It is

white, coloring-free, sugar-free and I think it is preservative free that's why

it doesn't last much. It is about $100 inc postage. It says 100,000U/ML SF and

it is a 480ml size.

- We are using oral Nystatin powder, too. Ours is from the local

pharmacy, and has no color (white). It is VERY bitter, but we mix it with some

banana " pudding " (mashed baby bananas) 1/8 tsp to 2 oz bananas. It was not

particularly expensive...

Sounds like a choice of the pharmacy, or your doctor wrote it that

way.

Many do. Some kids are helped with artificials by No-Fenol, altho not

my family.

Might be for several reasons, the two main reasons that I can think of

are 1) old stock, 2) the special compound is only good for a month,

even if it was new stock. Ask your pharmacist. But you should not

use it after March 2003.

I would check Shaw's Biological Treatment book, Mr McCandless probably lists

it in hers or Bruce Semon (?sp) into yeast, or try searching for website for

Don't get the syrup!

Oral Powdered Nystatin is better for gut overgrowth. It will also help

thrush if you swish it around in your mouth. You can add it to juice or

use just plain water. Tastes a little bitter. Keep it refridgerated.

I don't know if it has a phenol connection or not. I am not sure if it

is manufactured under different brand names or not. If your doctor

isn't sure about dosage then he can call a pharmacist regarding it

and how to write the required amount for the prescription. That is

what my doctor did that didn't know how to write it up.

As an adult I was to take 1/8 tsp. and then later 1/4 tsp of the powder.

Always start out small. The dosage is increased when the smaller

dose doesn't present die-off symptoms.

I am thinking about tryig nystatin for a short period of time for my daughters

yeast. Looking at it, it appears there are many different ways to get it. I

was wondering if someone has a brand or type that is probably most suitable for

a child with a leaky gut and sensitive to phenols? So sad, but I have heard

that many actually come in a sugary base. Also would be interested in hearing

of the dosages that was given or reccomended. I'm pretty sure our doctor will

perscribe it but he has no clue as to the doses to be taken for an intestinal

yeast overgrowth.

Thanks,

My son has been on liquid nystatin for years. He loves the taste, we get the

pharmacy to mix it up and they must add a flavor to it. He takes it right down

with a spoon.

Yes, my son was on Nystatin for a long time with no problems.

Nystatin is not one of the yeast medications that affects the liver

as far as I know. Diflucan, Flucanazole, etc. are the yeast drugs

which can affect liver function. That's why with those drugs

doctors usually have the patient on it for 2 weeks, then off 2

weeks, then on 2 weeks etc. and only for a few rounds since they are

pretty effective at killing the yeast.

But Nystatin is pretty safe I think.

Good luck.

My son has been on Nystatin for six months. He takes 1/2 the adult

tablet (with the food coloring washed off) - when his yeast is

really bad, he takes 1 adult tablet per day for a few days. Every

time I skip a day or 2, he gets yeast problems, so I have not missed

too many days, and he is ok.

We have been using Nystatin with our 15.5 month old twins since June

and have had no problems. Nystatin is all natural and the pharms

harvessed it to sell. It does not go into the bloodstream like the

other rx antifungals. Powder form is best and we have put it into our

twins pear sauce with no problem. It is bitter and we were told that

we could use Agave to sweeten it. So far so good.

Although Nystatin is usually very safe, please be aware that it is possible to

be allergic to it. I

was. It wasn't just die-off, it lasted too long for that. Gave me severe joint

pains, lupus flare.

Too many things at once!

Could be die-off from the Nystatin

Could be a reaction to whatever the Nystatin is compounded with (colors dies

etc)

Could easily be the Super Nu Thera

Could be too much magnesium

Could be a reaction to the CLO

In general it is best to start only one thing at a time, wait at least a

week, watch for results, and then add something else. If I were you I would

back off of everything except one of the things and start over

Been there done that,

Josie

Nystatin

We met with a DAN Dr. for the first time on Wed. We started Nystatin

yesterday afternoon (1/2 tsp). Within a few hours she had a large

soft stool. Which is unusual for her, they usually are well formed.

Her eye-contact and comprehension has also decreased. Today she had

several potty accidents. Today I decieded to break up the 1/2tsp into

three different doses during the day. Maybe I should just give 1/4 a

day or stop altogether or something else.

We also started her on the following supplements yesterday:

Super Nu Thera 1/4 tsp

Calcium/Magnesium liquid 1 tsp

Cod liver oil 1/2 tsp

Liquid Zinc 1 1/2 tsp

On November 16th we started her on the SCD diet and have continued

the GFCF diet. We started GFCF in August and HN enzymes and

probiotics in June. Since adding the SCD we have had almost perfect

eye-contact until last night.

I am confident that yeast is an issue but what do you do with

regression? Stop the medication or go slower or keep plugging away.

Is it likely it could be one of the supplements we added?

Maybe I should stop the Nystatin and just give the new supplements a

try to watch for reactions and than retry the Nystatin.

I was told the supplements she didn't need her body would throw-out.

The Enzymes for Autism book pg. 130-131 talks about over

supplementation. I don't think the supplements would have made a

reaction that quickly. I want to learn more about how much to give

them and what to look for with over supplementation. I expect my

daugher will greatly benefit from these supplements.

I am also going to take out honey, grapes and apples which is SCD

legal but maybe helping the yeast.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Regression if sooo hard.

Thanks Melinda

Too many things all at once! Its best to start slow

and with 1 supplement to see if there are any

reactions. Many of those can cause mushy poop

including the Mag, CLO, and NuThera.

I would STOP everything and go slow...

Hi Melinda,

I understand your frustration with regressions--so frustrating!

I wonder if she is having die off from the nystatin. You can try

giving her some activated charcoal (I think you can do 1/4 cap to

start) and see if things improve. That's how we knew it was yeast

die off.

Hang in there!

Also--we have always found it very confusing to start too many things

at once.

Why would

Hi Chelsea,

Cody get's his zinc in his morning breakfast drink and doesn't seem

to make a difference if it's before or after eating, but I can tell

you when I take my zinc, if I do it on an empty stomach or before

eating I get a really bad stomach ache and end up with really loose

stools. But if I take it after I've had my morning breakfast (bagel

with peanut butter and glass of water), then there's no problems.

Maybe his stomach is sensitive to the zinc as well.

Peace,

Bobbie
