Blue Green Algae

On the news today they are warning of Vancouver Lake closure due to

Blue Green algae overgrowth which will make humans/pets sick.

I don't go to this lake but am wondering why something green and

herbal sounding makes people sick. Granted they are probably

unhealthy to begin with. I always thought that algae grows due to

high nitrogen levels, so is it the algae or maybe the

fertilizer/nitrogen that is settling in the lake?
