Guest guest
Oh wow, I sure wish I could have one of those put in rather than what I will get on the 1st. Sherry For Women Only Click here for a print-friendly versionReported October 23, 2006 Knee Replacement for WomenCHICAGO (Ivanhoe Broadcast News) -- They walk. They run. They dance. Woman today are more active than ever before!Take e Rossof. She walks about two miles a day at her job as a nurse administrator. But it wasn't always this easy..."I was limping a lot," she says. For eight years -- a painful knee slowed Rossof down until she opted for knee replacement surgery. "Immediately I could get out of bed and take a step and walk," she says. "So that was significant and HUGE!"Surgeons perform more than 400,000 knee replacements every year. Nearly two-thirds of patients are women, yet the implants used in the surgery weren't always the best fit for a woman.Rossof received a new implant called The Zimmer Gender Solutions High-Flex Knee. The FDA recently approved it, and it's made specifically for women. Unlike older implants -- designed more with a man's anatomy in mind -- these implants are narrow and thin. They also allow for a woman's wider pelvis.Orthopedic surgeon Rosenberg, M.D., of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, says, "It's just a step that allows us to fit the woman patient better. It's like wearing a pair of pants that fit you well as opposed to one that you sort of have to adjust yourself to because they don't really fit in the right places."Dr. Rosenberg is one of 13 doctors who developed the implant. They put it in place through a small incision during a simple surgical procedure. He says a better fit means greater flexibility, less pain, and a quicker recovery. Surgeons can use the implant on patients with most types of arthritis of the knee. There are about 11 hospitals in the United States performing the procedure with this implant.Four weeks after surgery, Rossof was ready to reclaim her active lifestyle. She says, "I'm looking forward to getting back to travel and back to some of the things I like doing."This article was reported by Ivanhoe.com, who offers Medical Alerts by e-mail every day of the week. Guest guest
You can always ask for what you want. I got my OS by first finding the implant I wanted, then clicking on their "physicians" link. Ann S. Guest guest
Oh, I just noticed it's made by Zimmer. I have Zimmer knees now. Hmmm and one has to be removed but not because of the knee but because of the # & ***!! doctor who was in a hurry and left grout in the surgical site. I will definitely ask my new OS about this. I have to go to a funeral visitation tonight and I dread walking into the mortuary limping like an old cow. Guest guest
That seems odd. Go to the Zimmer site & see if they have a physician locator. Ann S. Guest guest
If I may be so bold, it would probably help if you went to the site, downloaded what they have to say about the women's knee, and take it with you to the new OS. When I was going to get a TKR (you may remember that I backed out), I wanted the DePuy rotating platform knee, which comes in 2 flavors, RP and RP-F. The latter is for very active people who need full ROM (why even make the non-F, I ask?). I asked my doc for that. He said it was up to the hospital but they were likely to deny it because it was WAY more expensive. I talked to his nurse about it twice more and they actually appealed to the hospital, who appealed to DePuy, who made a special price deal just for me (leaving my doc very pissed off when I cancelled). So if the female knee is more expensive, you could try that too. I think Zimmer and DePuy are in competition (DePuy claims there's no need for a female knee), so if the female knee costs more, you could start whining (not that you whine -- but I do when necessary) about sex discrimination and also tell them that DePuy was willing to reduce the price of the knee type I wanted, so maybe Zimmer would be too. Good luck. I hope you get the female knee. We are, after all, built differently than men. Ann S. Guest guest
When I first went to this OS and told him I had a Zimmer he said he uses Zimmer at times two plus a couple others so we'll see. I am in a lot of pain tonight. I had to walk down & up a steep incline about 1/4 of a block to the funeral home. Odd set up to say the least. No steps just a very wide driveway. It must be a riot for people to get out of there in the winter when it's all icy. I can just see the hearse spinning its wheels. We had to park on the street above because it was so crowded. Guest guest
Hi Everyone, BOY AM I LUCKY!!! Guest guest
hi i am only 32 and i am having just " odd " issues - definately irregular periods (which i've always had) and more recently, spotting for up to 10 days before my period. (sorry if any of you men are reading this - LOL) my dr has had labs ordered, i've had more internal and external exams and tests than i'd like, all to rule out anything physically wrong. all checks out " okay " . the irregular periodsd have been occuring since i was a teen, along with some spotting. sometime along the wawy, (although i cannot pinpoint it) it got worse. collectively, my drs (my gyn, pcp, asthma) believe that its not the xolair but the stress of the collection of meds (figure 9-10 daily meds, plus xolair, plus whatever rescue meds) is having on my body, plus the stress the asasthma, other issues and my insane insomnia. thats my thought on it. my spotting has not shown any pattern relating to when i get my xolair -- heck, it has no pattern at all, except it happens when the day ends in " Y " (lol - groan! can you tell i spent too much time with my dad? bad jokes!!) i know we chatted about this before - if you do a search, i'm sure you'll find some other info... have you delayed your shot by a week or two? i'm just thinking typically, menses occurs every 4 weeks - so maybe that way you'd be able to tell what is your body and what might be xolair related? keep us posted! heather > > I'll try and approach this topic delicately (I know there are some > curious men reading this and boy will they be disappointed for this > concerns MENSTRUATION). > > I am 52 and haven't even had a hot flash, steroids have always > affected my cycle. Guest guest
I too, am 32. I have been having issues with this. I was put on the BCP, but that did not help. The visit from Aunt Flo has not gone away. My dr's tell me this is perimenopausal. That was scary to hear. I am going to the dr this week and I will be bringing this up. People, especially the dr's and medical professionals, need to know this. Perhaps Xolair should be notified as well > > > > I'll try and approach this topic delicately (I know there are some > > curious men reading this and boy will they be disappointed for this > > concerns MENSTRUATION). > > > > I am 52 and haven't even had a hot flash, steroids have always > > affected my cycle. Guest guest
Ladies experiencing these type of symptoms should let their allergist and their OB-GYNs know. If you have been taking a lot of prednisone and are no longer taking pred, that is something to be considered. Also, be sure to rule out things like mono and thyroid issues that can impact visits from Aunt Flo.
