Guest guest
Well, I've got news - I am reconsidering the effectiveness of Xolair. I had my fifth shot on Nov 15th, I committed to doing six months and making a decision. I got a flu shot on Nov. 8th, I had to be off steroids at least five days before. How I dreaded that. In the middle of Oct. I started with this new spray called Symbicort, come first weekend in November I stop taking the steroids - first time in two years. Had the flu shot, then the Xolair a weeklater. Ran out of symbicort but figured this would be a good test to see if the Xolair was kicking in. Come the day before thanksgivin I start having problems breathing (and I have been doing no shopping, just going to my sisters for dinner and her house is allergy minimal due to her daughter). Friday my breathing is still compromised, I call the pulmonologist who puts me back on 30 mg prednisone. Come the next day I am starting to be distressed so I jump it up to 60 on Saturday. It's Monday and I am still wheezy, I can now walk from room to room but I'm back as I was for the past two years - on a high dose of steroids and still having trouble. I will do the last Xolair shot next month as I committed to, but I will go back on the symbicort and see if I get off the steroids again before my sixth shot. I am spending $100 for Xolair serum plus the cost to have the dr. inject it. Symbicort is not covered under my presciption plan, it will cost me $140 out of pocket for two sprays for a month. I really thought the four shots of Xolair (started in JULY) and the symbicort combination was why I was able to easily get off the evil candy (I've been using advair for years but never saw much benefit). Using up the symbicort sample around the time of my fifth Xolair injection and the problems I had a week later... hmmm maybe I'm better off discontinuing the shots and spending a little extra for this spray. We will have to see how I do after I resume the symbicort, gotta have the pharmacy order it. Will let you know. ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Be a better sports nut! Let your teams follow you with Mobile. Guest guest
Joy, It took me 1.5 YEARS to see any objective or subjective difference on xolair. After I started, my doctor took me off my symbicort and all bronchodilators in hospital for a trial while on 40 mg of evil candy. I lasted 1.5 days before my lung function tanked and he was stuffing the albuterol into me. Maybe you need to take a medication like symbicort or advair or such all the time and the xolair will just spare you some pred (that is all it is doing for me...which is considered a massive success by the way). Many of the stories here of people stopping most of their meds and being " cured " by xolair are not typical. In fact, many pulmos and allergists believe xolair to be " expensive crap " since it's effectiveness may not warrant the price tag. Just presenting both sides of the coin..... Still on the evil pred for 4.5 years and counting..... ----- Original Message ---- From: Joy VanSleet <jclutterbuster@...> Sent: Monday, November 26, 2007 2:05:38 PM Subject: [ ] Re:No posts in a week Well, I've got news - I am reconsidering the effectiveness of Xolair. Guest guest
I am sorry but 5 shots of xolair is not enough medicine or time for the xolair to be evaluated. Some of us have seen dramatic results before a year. Some of us have gotten completely off of pred. after a year of xolair. Please give the xolair a chance. I totally understand that it is your decision ,I just don't think 5 shots are enough to see any dramatic results of xolair. I began taking xolair in Feb. 2006. I got off steroids in Nov. 2006. I have been steroid free for a year now. I was able to go outside this spring and summer and sleep with my windows open. People would cut grass and I could breathe. You might want to give xolair more time to work. If it can get peolple off of steroids who took 60 mgs. a day, it just might help you. I hope it will.
