Second Life - for real

For many years, I dreamed of having the health to hike up mountains

like I did in my youth. Since I strained to walk up even a slight

grade, going up a mountain (well, eastern hills as the westerners

would call them) I could only dream.

Ten years ago, at age 51, a Doctor said I had the lungs of an 89

year-old and would need oxygen soon. Stop smoking or die he said.

I chose to live and did stop smoking and today I think that doctor

would take 60 years off his assesment.

Just three years ago, with COPD, another doctor told me I could

probably not breath well enough to walk on level ground soon and put

me on Advair and Spiriva to slow down my deterioration.

He also sent me to my allergist who put me on Uniphyl and Xolair for

asthma, which I had all my life but just sort of lived with.

Two weeks ago I hiked 900 feet up in elevation on a steep and

treacherous trail to the top of a mountain in an hour and a half. I

could have done more.

There I met several serious hikers and climbers ... all of them

specimens of the best of physical condition and health. Only then

did I realize that I am now one of them.

Xolair, Advair, Spiriva, Uniphyl .... I thank them all and I thank

my doctors because without them I could only live my dreams in the

imaginative world of Second Life.
