really soon.

I'm no doctor, but I really think you need to get to yours ASAP. I spent a

month on strict bed rest just after Thanksgiving and before Christmas with

very bad pneumonia. I thought I just had bronchitis and I couldn't have

been more off the mark! I didn't make a big ENOUGH deal out of mine!

I don't want to scare you, but you're describing exactly how I felt. Mine

started in the beginning in my chest as well, and into my sinuses and even

my ears and throat. I was just as confused as you, because I agree, it's a

reverse pattern! I had to fight with my doctor to keep from being

hospitalized. I have a pulse oximeter at home, and he did order home oxygen

so he was willing to work with me more than other doctors might. I'm just

5 minutes from my local hospital, and I also have epi pens at the ready on

my nightstand. I know being sick stinks, but it's nothing to fool around

with. It took much longer for me to recover than I ever expected, and my

oxygen level dropped the most upon lying down and exertion. I'd be very

careful if I were you....

The oxygen helped me tremendously, it helped me feel less lethargic, and

definitely more awake and alert. It didn't help with the coughing, and I

can definitely relate. I tore some of my intercostal muscles from all the

coughing, and then they became inflamed. I ended up on evil candy for my

troubles, which just ticked me off and made me moody. Horribly

uncomfortable. Advil can help some, but not much!

Plenty of rest, even if you have to do it upright in your favorite chair or

on the sofa, tons of fluids and a good expectorant. I practically LIVED on

mucinex during that time!

Please, PLEASE see your doc or visit the ER. ESPECIALLY if you have a

fever! It took me TWO rounds of levaquin 10 days each, plus a z-pack to get

rid of mine. Very unusual, but it was a very stubborn infection. I'm very

lucky that my doc let me stay home to ride it out! Of course, I had to see

him once a week during the whole mess.

Be well,

sounds like you're pretty miserable - seems similar to what i had.

mucinex (OTC) might help break up the congestion. drink gallons and

gallons of water. even nebbing (sterile - i boil mine on the stove)

water might help break it up. i'm sure an up to date version of

albuterol will help too.

if laying down causes issues, maybe add a few pillows or find a

recliner or somethign similar to sleep in.

i'm glad the xolair is helping you so much.

hope you feel better

When I get like that I haave to sleep sitting up.

Albuterol by neb may actually make you cough more. What happens is

that it alleviates all that constriction giving the mucus room to

move and get expelled by your coughing. No fun, but it does mean its

moving. What my doc has me do when I'm like that is do the neb AND

take Mucinex twice a day. If I'm not taking anything else with

sudafed, I can take Mucinex D.

As always, ask your doctor.

Oh, up your water intake. Hot green tea helps, and make sure you get

your regular daily requirement of vitamin C.

Feel better soon!

I've discovered coughing is the worst thing I can do, although I constantly want

to do it to bring up the mucus in the lungs. The more I cough, the worse the

wheezing gets - but if I use the Mucinex, at least the coughing is more

productive. Even more importantly, I take decongestants. Without them, the

wheezing and the clicking keep me awake. Used to take Allegra D, but found I

didn't get along well with the pseudoephedrine, so switched to simple OTC

decongestants which work fairly well. Got a cold a few months ago which caused

the sinuses to flare into another bout of sinusitis, which I haven't had for

three years since getting a sinus " D & C " at Duke in 2004 - I had MRSA, mold and a

bacterial infection up there, which was pretty serious and required six weeks of

vancomycin infusion after the surgery. They didn't want to take any chances

this time around, so off I went to Duke again last week to see what's up, so to

speak.

I'm using Foradil, Nasacort and Pulmicort, and before bed a shot of Combivent.

That keeps everything under control. One other thing I found that helps is

taking a deep breath and holding it. For some reason, it quiets everything

down.

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the suggestions several of you made. I realize that the

desire to cough to get that mucous out of the way did in a sense make

the coughing worse but then .... well, you know, I felt like I had too!

I went for a PFT on Mon. Half way through the test I said I felt

too bad to go on. This feeling of extreme fatigue and shortness of

breath has happened several times although I've never complained or

terminated the test because I was trying to be cooperative. It's a big

mistake because driving home I'm loopy from lack of air. This time a

nurse appeared, then my doctor. They asked if I wanted hospital, meds,

oxygen or what. I was given albuterol and left sitting in a chair for

2-1/2 hours.

Went back to the doc today who said I sounded better than 2 days

ago. Also turns out that I have the thrush in my throat which probably

accounts for the irritated throat and chest - maybe for diarrhea and

fatigue, too, I don't know. Will start some horrible awful liquid med

tonight (nystatin?) that I must gargle and then swallow. Still coughing

up mucous but not anywhere near as much and it's not that horrible color

w/blood.

The doc said my PFT, even though terminated early, was very good!

Still I feel short of breath - she indirectly and mildly suggested

possibly something about heart ..... What should I look for? Ask for?

Is this common w/asthma? How can someone have a good pft and still feel

hungry for air?

Can't wait to be well again! Why is it that job interviews always

come along when I'm sick? !!! (just a little pitty pot tune here!)

Xolair helps, definitely - my doc and I agree - but still have other

illnesses that can really knock me down. Stay well, everyone!

Nystatin - that's for vaginal yeast infections - seems like an odd gargle - I

have to use the cream when I'm on antibiotics because I get the yeast infections

in my armpits and they itch like crazy - when I'm in public, people do seem to

wonder about my ape-like armpit scratching. The stuff works, though. However,

if it fails, I have a backup superbelchfire single pill, fluconazole, that does

the trick. I don't understand it though, because I rarely eat yeast.
