Guest guest
I am very blessed. I have not had the flu or even a respiratory infection. Praise God! I have had some minor sob from time to time because of all of the pollutants in the air, but overall I have felt pretty good. I didn't realize it had been that long since anyone posted! Have a great day--wish all of you could enjoy our cool, sunny day, here in South Texas! Adah uca79iii <bme1979@...> wrote: No one has posted since Feb. 15. Guest guest
Speaking of the flu. I have been very concerned with all the news reporting that this year's flu shots are not as effective as they should be. They said that only a maximum of 40% of the people who get shots this year will be helped, as opposed to at least 70% in other years. With washing hands, Xolair (I'm convinced Xolair helps and allows me to keep my strength up), and limiting my " people contact " I'm hoping to make it through the season. It seems everywhere I go people are coughing, sneezing, and not feeling well. Oklahoma is listed as a problem Flu State. On Feb 22, 2008, at 1:59 PM, Adah Voigt wrote: > I am very blessed. All three of our area hospitals are full of people who just can't seem to shake all the effects. I guess my wife, mother in law and I are very blessed to not have any symptom as of yet. My wife works for a large trucking firm at it's home office. Her company paid to have all employees and their families vaccinated with the flu shot a few weeks ago. My wife says that all 500 of the local employees are mostly at work with few absentees due to sickness. I guess that in our case (at least) the flu shot seems to be working. Got my xolair shots today. Nurse said it was my 133rd since 2003. Doug Group founder
Guest guest
So many people I have talked to have had a different version of the flu even though they got a shot. However, they are people who are in contact with the public daily. The flu went through the school where my daughter teaches, but she stayed well--used clorox wipes and antibacterial gel in her classroom (she is an asthmatic, too, but her allergy shots have really helped.) I agree that the xolair helps, too, somehow--maybe keeping the sinusitis under control helps. I know some in this group still have severe trouble with sinus infections, but I believe the xolair has helped keep me well. Don't know where Texas is listed in the " flu " arena. Guest guest
Adah - I was at my infectious disease control doc's office today (we're still working on my sinus infections - learned I have to take two more weeks of cefepime daily infusions thru my handy dandy pic line, plus two more weeks of cipro and fluconazole) and was fretting about getting flu because of ineffectual flu shots this year, and I was trying to cadge some tamiflu as a preventive. Doc decided to test me first for flu - I don't have it so I can't get the tamiflu shot. Sort of like saying there's a cancer vaccine that will prevent cancer, but you can't get it until you have cancer. At any rate, they mentioned there is a virus running around but it's not flu. It acts like flu but it's a cold. They can give you Tamiflu or Relenza which are antiviral meds for the flu, a virus, but they can't give you anything for a cold, which is also a virus. Sometimes the medical community perplexes me. Guest guest
Me, too. And sometimes my four doctors each tell me different ways to treat the same problem! Depends on exactly what the problem is whose advice I take! Example: My allergist wanted to treat my bad allergy cough by doubling my nexium--his theory is that when the allergy cough starts up it is aggravated by the acid reflux, particularly at night, so he doubled my nexium. My pulmonologist thought I should try nose spray as she thought the cough might have been the result of nighttime drainage. My GP agreed with her, so we added nasonex and astelin. (By the way, this cough lasted only a few more days when I started using the nasal sprays regularly! And the last visit to the GP he reduced my Nexium to one a day. This cough was the only reaction I have had this winter to the mountain cedar, but it took three doctors to finally come up with a solution that worked! I only saw these three doctors during the " coughing " spell.) Oh well--at least there was something prescribed that worked. Hope you don't come down with a virus or the flu. Sounds like you have enough problems with just the sinus infections. Thanks, too, for the explanations for the various differences in flu and cold and virus symptoms. Get better...... Guest guest
I work in a lab and a fax was sent from the Oklahoma State Health Department stating that the part of the vaccine isn't working. The flu vaccine consist of part A and part B. The OSHD stated that part B of the vaccine was uneffective (or ineffective??). I run the FLU and RSV test alot. The number of people with the flu is high. What I observed was that people that are positive usually have flu A & B or just B. I had my second shot of X at the being of the month and I haven't had a cold or a sinus infection since I started X. Soldier, Dineen > > No one has posted since Feb. 15. Guest guest
Good to hear from you. Thanks for the info. And thanks for serving our country.....We appreciate you. Two of my very good friends just came back from Iraq, and the grandson of a friend of mine just arrived at BAMC after being injured in Iraq. We are praising God that his life was spared. So thanks again for serving our country. We are proud of our troops... Glad the xolair is already helping. dineen2323 <dineen2323@...> wrote: I work in a lab and a fax was sent from the Oklahoma State Health Department stating that the part of the vaccine isn't working. Guest guest
Hi Terry - I'm so sorry you're in for yet 2 more weeks of IV antibiotics. I truly feel for you - as you know, I've been there, done that. By the way, Tamiflu is not a shot, it's prescription pills. And it's not that nobody wants to give it to you for a cold but it's only effective against flu viruses, not at all effective against cold viruses. There are no medications for cold viruses because there are more than 200 of them and it would be virtually impossible (at least so far) to develop a vaccine or medication for so many. Flu viruses come in basically 2 types, even though the strains of these 2 types are constantly changing, Tamiflu if effective against the parts of flu viruses that are the same no matter what the strain and can be used preventively during flu outbreaks but is extremely expensive to use like that since you'd need to take it for at least a month at this point in the season. However, an older flu medication, rimantidine, is much less expensive and is also approved for prevention of flu during outbreaks. My pulmo prescribes it for me every year to take daily during flu outbreaks. I can't think of a reason why your ID doc won't put you on that preventively. Maybe check with your primary or pulmo? I hate to be subversive here, but I would hate to see you get the flu on top of all you're already dealilng with. Relenza (an inhaled anti-influenza medication) is pretty risky in patients with underlying asthma or COPD. It can trigger bronchospasm and has caused fatalities in these patients, and to my knowledge pulmo docs don't use it their patients. So don't feel bad about missing out on this one! I hope this will be you final round of IV meds. Fran > > No one has posted since Feb. 15.
