Guest guest
Pam, What breed is your baby girl? Has she lost or gained weight? Does she drink more water than normal for her? I have had several dogs over the years. Let me go through what comes to mind. Variations in her diet can cause turmoil. Settle on one main food regimen and keep it at that or close to it. Make any changes slowly over a week or more. Their guts are not like ours. Little continuous changes can cause them turmoil. If her stomach is sensitive, try making a rice based food for her. If you need help, I can pass on a good recipe for that. Another possibility is that she's allergic to something in the raw meats. Remember that a lot of that stuff is shot full of antibiotics to be able to make it to the slaughter-house. It may be hormone free but is it antibiotic or other drug free? Salt in any quantity is not a good thing for dogs either. It will give them diarrhea. What enzyme powder are you giving her? Is there a reason she needs this? I wonder about the kefir. It's a fermented milk product and milk is mucous forming. From what my vet told me long ago, fermented milk products are not good for dogs in any frequency or quantity. He just told me they had a different gut to us. From that I think they have different bacteria than humans. Since she's a liver patient and she's vomiting bile, I think I'd see what her vet says. It may be more than food related. When a dog grazes (eats grass) it's generally to TRY to vomit so they feel better... like a tummy ache. At least that's what I've observed over the years. I feed my dog Flint River Ranch foods. She used to have a lot of intestinal problems on others, but she's been fine on their formulation. It's not raw but it is human food grade ingredients. Remember that dogs are omnivores, not strictly carnivores. That's my thoughts, Skip On 25 Jul 2004 at 21:03, pam wrote: > I'm getting frustrated w/ my little dog. NOT SURE EXACTLY, MAYBE LOST 5OZ OVER PAST YEAR > Does she drink more water than normal for her? SHE DRINKS APPROX. 1/4CUP PER DAY MAX WHEN HOT OR AFTER A PLAYFUL DAY. SHE IS VERY ACTIVE.(TOUGH QUESTION) > > I have had several dogs over the years. Let me go through what > comes to mind.Variations in her diet can cause turmoil. THAT MAKES PERFECT SENSE, I CHANGE FREQUENTLY OR SHOULD I SAY I HAVE A FEW ITEMS THAT I FEED. ANY RECIPE IS A GOOD THING IF YOU WISH TO PASS ALONG. > > Another possibility is that she's allergic to something in the raw > meats. Remember that a lot of that stuff is shot full of antibiotics to > be able to make it to the slaughter-house. It may be hormone free > but is it antibiotic or other drug free? SUPPOSEDLY IT IS, THAT'S WHAT THEY TOLD ME AND THE PRICE REFLECTS THAT. BUT WHO REALLY KNOWS, IT'S A CRAP SHOOT WITH ANYTHING ANYMORE > > Salt in any quantity is not a good thing for dogs either. It will give them diarrhea. I WILL ELIMINATE ANY SALT ADDING WHICH I DO PUT IN A BATCH OF TREATS > > What enzyme powder are you giving her? Is there a reason she > needs this? ENZYME RESEARCH, A DIGESTIVE PLANT ENZYME DIETARY SUPPLEMENT. THE VET ALONG TIME AGO SAID THEY WOULD HELP HER DIGEST FOOD BETTER. NOT REALLY SURE BUT MADE SENSE AT THE TIME. LIVER SHUNT DOGS ARE SUPPOSE TO HAVE LOWER FAT/PROTEIN INTAKE BECAUSE THEY CANNOT HANDLE THE AMONIA BUILDUP CAUSED BY THE DIGESTION OF THESE THINGS. SO THE AMONIA MADE BY THESE BYPASS THE LIVER AND GO INTO THE BLOOD, INTO THE BRAIN CAUSING PROBLEMS. > > I wonder about the kefir. It's a fermented milk product and milk is > mucous forming. From what my vet told me long ago, fermented > milk products are not good for dogs in any frequency or quantity. > He just told me they had a different gut to us. From that I think > they have different bacteria than humans. RARELY DO I DO KEFIR, IT'S NOT A DAILY THING, MAYBE 2 TIMES A MONTH, HONESTLY IT'S ONLY WHEN I SEE HER NOT EATING. NOT THAT THAT IS RIGHT BUT I WILL STOP. WHEN SHE THROWS UP I FEEL MY STOMACH BURNING FOR HER AND USE TO GIVE HER MILK OF MAGNESIA TO SETTLE THAT THAN I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT (SHOULD I BE DOING THAT?). SO WOULD DO SOME KEFIR BUT YOUR ANALOGY MAKES SENSE. IT'S A NIGHT THING OR MORNING THING. WHAT I MEAN WHEN SHE IS SICK AT THOSE TIMES THAN MY MIND IS INCLINED FOR USING THE KEFIR. > > Since she's a liver patient and she's vomiting bile, I think I'd see what her vet says. It may be more than food related. THE VET TOLD ME WHAT TO DO, FEED A LOW PROTEIN FAT FOOD AND USE MILK THISTLE AND OR DANDELION. AND IF I CANNOT CONTROL HER DISCOMFORT THAT WAY THAT OPERATE, WHICH WOULD GIVE HER LIVER MORE CLEANSING ABILITY. THE DIET BACK THAN 5YRS AGO DIDN'T WORK, SHE DIDN'T GET BETTER SO I RESEARCHED AND THAT'S WHEN I TRIED RAW. SHE HANDLES RAW BEST. SHE'S BEEN THIS WAY/SICK SINCE THE DAY I GOT HER AT 8 WEEKS, SHE'S 8YRS NOW. AN OPERATION IS APPROX 5,000 DOLLARS. I HAVE PUT ALMOST THAT INTO HER SINCE I GOT HER. I HAVE TO DO THIS ON MY OWN, I'VE FIGURED OUT ALOT SOO FAR, LEARNED ALOT ANYWAY, NOT ALL RIGHT - OBVIOUSLY---> BELEIVE ME THIS BREAKS MY HEART. > > When a dog grazes (eats grass) it's generally to TRY to vomit so > they feel better... like a tummy ache. AND I DO BELEIVE THIS IS TRUE ABOUT THE TUMMY ACHE AND GRASS > > I feed my dog Flint River Ranch foods. SHE HAS HARDLY ANY TEETH LEFT IN HER MOUTH DUE TO HER YEARS OF SICKNESS AND JAW BONE NOT DEVELOPING PROPERLY. SO SOFT FOOD IS ALWAYS HER FAVORITE. HER POOP WAS FINE THROUGHOUT THIS CAN OF FOOD, HILLS I.D. UNTIL TODAY WHEN I FOUND THE MUCOUSY POOP IN THE HOUSE AND THIS WAS THE CANNED FOOD. I CHANGED NOTHING THE PAST WEEK OTHER THAN THIS FOOD, AND ALL WAS FINE UNTIL TODAY. Pam P.S. Hope the caps didn't drive your eyes insane but I wanted to differentiate between your writing and mine.
