Guest guest
I am no medical specialist, but I do know that the side effects of the xolair are less frightening that the side effects that I experienced from the prednisone. I was one of the fortunate ones in that my bones so far have not been affected by the years I was on prednisone, but I have pretty severe glaucoma and my personality/mental state was very affected with each big dose of pred. I have experienced no side effects from the xolair so far other than a sore arm when the shot wasn't given right--the fault of the nurse who gave it to me! My option has been the medicine's side effects or breathing! No option there I am thinking. Guest guest
I have had no side effects at all from the Xolair, I've been using it for 3 years +. I have experienced numerous side effect from my other meds, Prednisone, etc. My Pulmo feels Xolair is one of the " safer " Meds, but breathing is not an option! I self inject in the thighs and stomach. The stomach injections are completely painless, I know it sounds crazy, but unless I forget to let the alcohol dry, no pain. The thighs sometimes sting a little, rarely, but sometimes, again could be the alcohol. Welcome to the site and I hope, like so many, in a year you will be thinking Xolair is the best thing that happened to you, well almost the best thing, LOL Ron On Jul 23, 2008, at 1:33 PM, Adah Voigt wrote: > I am no medical specialist, but I do know that the side effects of > the xolair are less frightening that the side effects that I > experienced from the prednisone. Guest guest
Anyone had mood disorders triggered by use of Prednisone? Either severe depression or bi-polar disorder? I had a severe episode of bi-polar disorder due to being on an antidepressant (speaking of horrible side effects). But prednisone is often another big culprit. ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Adah Voigt Sent: Wednesday, July 23, 2008 2:34 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Hi also new I am no medical specialist, but I do know that the side effects of the xolair are less frightening that the side effects that I experienced from the prednisone. Guest guest
Hi Becky, This is part of my post from last week re Pred. In addition to this I would get depressed as I was tapering off. If I remember correctly. I was on and off pred for about 2 years and because of my reaction and other long term problems my doctor and I finally made the decision to start Xolair. We didn't choose Xolair right away because I am a cancer survivor. But both us decided that the long term results would out weigh the risks. 1. I am breathing so much better not attached to a nebulizer anymore. I have had great results with Xolair. 2. Prednisone side effects long term are overall more serious and have a definate record of happening. 3. My quality of life " sanity " without Pred is back to normal. 4. Breathing is a necessary funtion and the pred wasn't really helping a lot unless on high doses sometimes. My prev post: would get prednisone pychosis while on Pred. I had very extreme mood swings and was not my normal self. I would get agressive, hyper, (felt like someone on speed) I couldn't sleep and would go on cleaning frenzies late at night. When I drove I would be very road rage..ish. I would also get very emotional and would feel like I was seriously going crazy. I think I was even a little parinoid. I know not all people have this severe of a reaction. My husband took it and didn't have any issues. Some people are just more sensitive to the Evil Candy. Guest guest
I've never heard of a requirement that Xolair must be injected into the belly. When I was injecting myself for 1-1/2 years I often did do at least 1 injection into the belly because it's easy (I have a big stomach) and convenient (plenty out there to see !) 3 shots at one time need to be rotated and ... it was somewhat fun to see the shocked look on my hubby's face. Actually, he too had injected a different med into his stomach at one time because it was most comfortable there. Really, the needles are very short and aren't going to puncture anything " important " - they are to just go into the fat. Many diabetics inject in their tummies without any trouble. I would, however, request privacy if they're going for the tummy. When I had my one series of 3 Xolair injs at the same time with a nurse she did 2 in the left arm (injected into high tender points which HURT but she did it INcorrectly) and one in the right arm. She asked about injecting into the belly but I thought that with a nurse I preferred arms. Make sure the nurse injects slowly - it's actually much more comfortable that way - perhaps the opposite of what some folks might think. I tend to doubt you'll have any problems with the actual injections but if you do, speak up. Xolair is not usually a painful experience. > > My Name is Dana and I am waiting to get my first shot. Guest guest
Oh, goodness, mood disorders triggered by prednisone are almost a classic. There was a famous child actress (1940s ? can't think of her name now - does anyone else?) who grew up and was an actress as an adult who discovered her mood swings and mental illness were caused by steroids. It's extremely common for MS patients as well as asthma and arthritis patients to take massive doses of steroids to control their disease. The result is often psychosis - and that's in people who otherwise did not have a problem. Mood disorders (including bi-polar) can also be triggered by anti- depressants - a sad fact that has been learned the hard way in the psychiatric community. Someone close to me had that experience. Unfortunately, several drugs could trigger it ranging from some blood pressure drugs to some experimental meds. Even some antibiotics. If Xolair is on the menu for you and works, that would be an enormous advantage. > > From: happygirl61972 <happygirl61972@... > <mailto:happygirl61972%40> > > Subject: [ ] Hi also new > <mailto: % 40> > > Date: Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 12:49 PM > > My Name is Dana and I am waiting to get my first shot. Guest guest
If I have a different nurse from the one who usually gives me my shot, I gently remind her that it needs to go in slowly and that I will be very still while she does it slowly. I thought injecting it slowly was a part of the instructions for giving xolair. Guest guest
After about 1 month on high dose pred and a weekend of solumdedrol I have just had, I am completely raging in the pred side effect dept. I was up at 5h30, craving carbs and the witch/bitch switch is jammed in the on position. Can I eat chocolate for breakfast? Actually, what I really want is sauasage....yum. Clothes still fit. Barely. Guest guest
I am not sure I would have survived on one month of high doses of pred. I fully understand the waking early--only I would have trouble going to sleep. When I got to sleep I would sleep maybe two or three hours and then be wide awake. I would also have this urge to clean house, clean out drawers, clean the kitchen really well--but I did have to hold myself back from going to the closet and getting out the vacuum. I could not even sit down and read when I couldn't sleep..... I also understand the food cravings. I really craved sweets and the only way I would not eat too many or too much was just not too bake. I could eat a whole batch of cookies if I baked them! I have yet to lose some of that fat! And at my age I probably never will, now. Hope you can get some relief very soon......sorry you had to be on the stuff. Guest guest
Hi, you sound like I was before Xolair. I get my shots in the arm - only the first two were in my tummy and quite frankly - the shots only hurt a little once in a while - depends own which nurse I get - somme are better than others. Xolair worked within a month for me. I was so bad that I could not go anywhere. Things are much improved although there are still some places, like shopping malls, theaters, restaurants, that I can't go to. There is always a chance for an allergic reaction but so far I have had no adverse side affects and only positive ones. Your are getting hampster DNA - so you might find that you have an overwhelming desire to be on an exercise wheel or to pee on wood chips:) ----- Original Message ---- From: happygirl61972 <happygirl61972@...> Sent: Wednesday, July 23, 2008 1:49:03 PM Subject: [ ] Hi also new My Name is Dana and I am waiting to get my first shot.
