Every winter I usually have 4-5 rounds of prednisone due to illness. Last

winter I had so much of it that when I tried to taper off, I suffered

withdrawal and my doctor had to extend that round and bring me off it a lot

slower.

I have been on inhaled steriods since a very young age. I have lost track

of all the different kinds of drug therapies I have tried in my lifetime. I

do know that when I am not taking inhaled steriods, I lose weight. I don't

think I can ever change my body structure or grow hair in places it should

be, but I know that I would feel better if I could lose weight.

I have my first shot tomorrow and I am apprehensive and a little scared. I

am not sure if this is the right way to go. All I want is to get away from

steriods. I asked the group when I first join about this because I am only

willing to take the risk with this new medicine if the possibility is there

and wondered if anyone has acheived this goal.

Welcome to the group! I've gone from an average of 9 rounds of

steroids every year to three, and I am much healthier thanks to Xolair!

I can't say if Xolair will or will not get you off of steroids, but

if your asthma is allergically driven, it offers you the best chance

for what is not available.

Hi ,

Everyone responds differently and at different time frames. But I wanted to

offer you some words of encouragement. The 2 years before I started Xolair I was

off and on Prenisone and they would have to put me on high doses like 80 or 50

mg's when I was really sick. I was on Advair then. I have been on Xolair for a

year and 3 months and during that time I only went on Prednisone once in at New

years because I was allergic to all the mold spors that had grown on my

Christmas tree and I had gotten sick from the exposure.

Prior to Xolair I was using a nebulizer all the time and had to take it with me

to work when

I was sick.  Now I rarley use my rescue inhaler. Not everyone has the same level

of results as this but its worth a try to stay off the dreaded prednisone and

have happier breathing.

I wish you the best. I too was nervous when I first started but I am over that

now because I started feeling so much better.

I have changed to Symbiocort last fall and the last time I had my PFT my doctor

said my results were normal. I confessed that I had been without my Symbiocort

for a week and she said we could look at lowering my dose (inhaled steroids)

next time if my results stayed the same.

I will be thinking good thoughts and prayers for you tomorrow.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. It is greatly appreciated.

I have seen ads for Symbiocort on TV. It sounds similar to Advair. Are

they different?

Hi,

Welcome! Just FYI - 'full dose' of Prednisone for you isn't

necessarily 'full dose' for everyone, some people (like me) take

Prednisone everyday or every other day for years, I think you

meant 'taper' dose. To answer your question, yes there are definite

side-effects (I think almost everyone in this group who has taken

Prednisone long-term has had side-effects), for some people being on

Xolair constantly, we still can't come totally off Prednisone.

Arguably though, the greatest 'side-effect' of Xolair is at least

lowering the amount of Prednisone you're on if not eliminating the

need for it all together. Maybe through the Xolair website, you can

find a Dr. closer to you that administers Xolair, so you can get back

on it. Good luck!

Hi Kim,

Just to fill you in, my name is Meagan, I'm 21 years-old, I live

in NY, I'm a college student majoring in pre-med, I have severe

allergies/asthma, I see an allergist/pulmo on Staten Island (I see

him b/c the theory among my Dr.'s years ago was that I'm too

complicated for any specialists near me), my pre-Xolair IgE was

1,100, I've been on Xolair 375mg every 2 wks for over 3 years, and

although I'm still on Prednisone, I have been able to taper to every

other day and to just 7mg (!), and I LOVE Xolair. I react oddly to

beta-agonists like albuterol, xopenex, and foradil. I was on Advair

for probably 2 years about 3 years ago, until we figured out that the

reason my asthma was `worse' was because of the beta-agonist in

advair. So I am no longer on ANY beta agonists. I am however on

Pulmicort, which is the steroid part of Symbicort.

The main reason why some people believe Symbicort is `better-

than' Advair is because Symbicort is a lot cheaper, and is covered

more easily by many insurance companies. Also, Symbicort contains

formoterol (Foradil) as it's long-acting beta-agonist and formoterol

has been shown to `kick-in' faster than salmeterol (Advair's long-

acting beta-agonist) so some asthma patients feel that Symbicort

works `better' than Advair. It's worth discussing possibly switching

from Advair to Symbicort with your pulmo, and by going on

mysymbicort.com, and clicking on `send me information about

Symbicort,' you can get more drug info mailed to you, which you or

your doctor might be interested in (my pulmo/allergist is one of the

physician-speakers for Symbicort, that's why I know about it.)

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

I was on Advair twice daily, along with steroid nasal spray twice a day and oral

prednisone

short term for allergy flare-ups that exacerbated my asthma.
