Guest guest
Dear : That sounds very much like Thrush, which is a yeast infection of the mouth. You should check with your doctor to make sure. There is medication that you can get for it. Sorry to hear that you have to be on such a high does of prednisone for so long. I'm glad to hear that it's brought your LFT's down, though. Are they going to start tapering your dosage soon? Good luck and take care! Guest guest
Yes , contact your doctor, sounds like you may have Oral Thrush, it is a yeast infection in the mouth, caused my immunosuppressants like prednisone, and Neoral, and Cellcept. Guest guest
, Sounds like you could have a case of Thrush. I have had it before with the white patches on my tongue and it also gets sore. In the morning it is most noticeable and I also have little white curdly looking stuff on my tongue and in the back of my throat.. I believe I'm getting it again now. The Dr. can prescribe Nystatin, or Diflucan and it should clear up pretty quickly. Take Care, Dianne Arneill AIH/PSC/Lupus/Sjogren's Dpa1228@... Guest guest
, what is your diagnosis? And what is the toxic drug that can put it into remission? I hope you get pregnant right away! Good luck! KayK in Austin, AIH/PBC?
Guest guest
, I don't know if anyone has already answered your question about the white stuff on your tongue, but it sounds like a yeast infection. There are rinses to clear it up, or pills, but they are both by prescription only. Good luck! Hugs, (AIH?)
Guest guest
Trish, I'm sure it's horrible for a mother to watch. The appetite and mood swings get better as they lower the dose. For me I don't feel any side effects at 10 mg's or less. I have no idea what that would equate to in dosage for a child. Many others speak of loosing the weight as the dose is tapered. For me that has not happened but I am unable to do much physically because of other problems. I'm sure for an active child this will help. Try to keep healthy snacks and keep her as active as you can. Hang in there. It will get better.
Guest guest
Trish, I am sorry you are having to go thru this and your daughter too. I have had the sore throat thing, too. I was dx with AIH in 9/01. I have been on 100 mg. of Imuran for over a 1 1/2 yrs and I went of prednisone once last June but I was put back on it in Jan 03. I am down to 10 mg. Yesterday I saw my GI and it looks like I will stay on 10 mgs. for a while. I also have joint pain that comes and goes, don't be surprised if your daughter complains that she hurts. If her hips start hurting, let the docs know. My doc told me yesterday that the hip hurting is one of the things they watch because pred. can cause deterioration. I have had one MRI, hated it, hope I never have to have one again. I had my liver biopsy done transjugular (thru the jugular vein) and I would rather have that done that a MRI! Drastic but true! The more support & understanding from friends & family the better off your daughter will be. I have had my illness for 2 years and my husband still does not completely understand. And you will find people that will just not get it. You will find that they will suggest " natural " stuff---once you are tired of explaining you will just start saying thank you and I will take that into consideration. I was working out at this gym and they could not understand why there were times I just couldn't go and work out. My pain was too great. Most people think " work it out " , " push yourself harder " " maybe your lazy " ----don't let anyone tell your daughter that because those people don't understand. I don't know if I remember how old you said your daughter is, but no matter that age, I am sure she will do well on her meds. Take Care! Guest guest
Oh yes the side affects they don’t often tell you about. If you haven’t had it before you’ll really notice them. I felt as though I was on ‘fast forward’ and could have done a days housework in a matter of minutes. The shaking can be very embarrassing too but after a while you get used to it and it doesn’t seem so bad. (Nothing worse than going through the checkout and have your hands shaking very badly but when the girl asked if I was ok perhaps I shouldn’t have said ‘oh I need a drink’ and this was 9.30 in the morning – no sense of humour) The bloating/weight gain is another nasty one. Yes you’ll stay awake so it’s best if you can take them as early in the day as possible. Avoid any caffeine drinks too which seem to make it worse. Just this year alone I’ve been on pred. five times. Did your doctor tell you that it must be taken with a meal otherwise you’ll get stomach problems. The long term side affects I think are far worse – my doctor refers to prednisone as the ‘bone melter’ and it’s one of the worst things you can take because long term it can affect your bones if you’re on it for a long period of time. If you had to go off it, I hope you didn’t stop cold turkey as that is very dangerous, you have to wean yourself off them very slowly. Yes they have horrific side affects but they’ve saved me several times and without pred. my doctor said I wouldn’t have made it. So yes, side affects aren’t good, but what dose were you on to have the stomach problems? The maximum amount I’ve been on is 75 mg a day. Bad side affects but in my books it’s a miracle drug. Guest guest
I think, if you’ve taken prednisone tapers several times before, there is another drug that is not mixing well with the prednisone. I had a similar reaction to zyflo. My doctor didn’t understand and told me to keep taking it anyway. That was impossible. I found out on my own that zyflo and theophyline don’t mix. I hope your bronchitis clears up soon. Drink lots of water. Guest guest
I sometimes wonder if there is a difference depending upon which generic you get. I also happen to believe we can get kind of sensitized to prednisone. This is just my personal experience. So the side effects seem to get worse over the years for me every time I take it. Luckily it still seems to usually work for me in terms of shrinking the polyps. I try to avoid taking it more than once a year if I can. But I would think the cumulative effects or sensitization to it as well as a slightly different formulation could actually make a difference. I don't know how well generics are regulated or tested to confirm they contain the exact amounts they are supposed to. When I was on chemo I had to take dexamethasone and I got completely psychotic from it and had thoughts of literally jumping off the roof. Not taking it was not an option with the chemo, so they had to put me on antipsychotics every cycle of chemo! I hope you are feeling better by now. This year I have been on prednosone since July, the Dr.s have weaned me down to 10mgs. a day, until...... and I still have times when I have to step up to 30mg for a few days They are contolling both my asthma and my AFS (allergic fungal sinusitis) with PrePredinosone. The noticable side effects that I get is MoonFace. You can definately tell when I am taking Pred. My husbands calls them the " fat face pills " . And increased appetite & weight gain. Guest guest
I have any number of tapers every year for the last twenty or so years. Thanks to prednisone, I now have osteoporosis and high blood pressure. Both my pulmo and my regular doc wanted me to start Xolair 5 years ago for two reasons: 1) to decrease my asthma and 2) to decrease my prednisone b/c of the terrible side effects. Talk with your doctor and your insurance company - there may be a doctor or medical facility closer to you that can administer the Xolair (I'm sure for a small fee, but probably less than the gas and time you have to spend to drive an hour and back). Guest guest
Me too! I was permintantly on the " evil candy " for a good 20 years straight before Xolair. I had necrosis in my right hip. At one point " they " were suggesting surgery and I was only 35!  My " ortho " had me get an MRI done not to long ago and he said that it actually looks as if the necrosis has stopped and that the hip bones are slowly starting to " re-calcify " , so if it keeps it up I won't have to get my hip replaced until I'm MUCH older.  From: pyle456 <coachmac@...> Subject: [ ] side effects of prednisone Date: Friday, June 27, 2008, 9:06 AM I have any number of tapers every year for the last twenty or so years.
